Marquette – The Northern Michigan University Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of James A. Strain, will present its spring chamber music concert on Sunday, April 9 at 3 p.m. in Reynolds Recital Hall.

The ensemble is composed of students who perform on various drums, vibes, marimbas, xylophones, timpani, hands and even paper bags. The concert features selections by 20th and 21st century North and South American composers, with musical styles ranging from ragtime to samba. There is no admission charge.

Gladstone – “Meet the Teams” Breakfast with Gladstone High School Braves Baseball Teams will be held on Sunday, April 9 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gladstone Middle School Cafeteria, 300 S. 10th Street, Gladstone.

Gladstone High School baseball team players, coaches and families will serve a deluxe breakfast buffet for $7, hold raffle sales, a silent auction and door prizes. Meet the team and coaches in a fun, family environment.

Calendar – Dance – Screening of The Royal Ballet’s Production of “Frankenstein” – Apr. 9

Marquette – Northern Michigan University’s Siril Endowment for the Music Arts will offer a screening of The Royal Ballet’s production of “Frankenstein” on Sunday, April 9 at 5 p.m. in 1100 Jamrich Hall on the NMU campus.

This is a period adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Gothic tale of morality and craving for love, companionship and understanding. The performance was filmed in London and will be projected in high definition in Jamrich Hall’s state-of-the-art auditorium.

The event is free for NMU students with ID, faculty and staff; $15 for general public adults; and $5 for ages 17 and under.

Gwinn – A Breakfast Buffet will be offered on Sunday, April 9 from 9 a.m. to noon at VFW Post 5670 in Gwinn.

The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for kids under 10. Breakfast includes pancakes, french toast, scrambled eggs, potatoes, biscuits and gravy, bacon and sausage.

Trumpeter Chase Sanborn Headlines NMU Jazz Fest – 4/7/17

NMU-TrumpeterMarquette, MIApril 6, 2017 – Trumpeter Chase Sanborn, an alumnus of Berklee College of Music in Boston, will be the featured guest artist at the Northern Michigan University Jazz Festival. He will perform the closing concert with the NMU Jazz Band and Jazz Combo at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 7 in Kaufman Auditorium. Tickets are $6 for NMU students, $8 for other students and $12 for the general public. They are available at NMU EZ Ticket outlets.

The NMU Jazz Festival will open with a free concert featuring The NMU Dixieland All-Stars and the Republic-Michigamme School Jazz Band at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 6, in Reynolds Recital Hall at NMU. Regional high school and middle school jazz bands will participate in clinics and performances from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. Sanborn will also lead guest artist clinics from 11-11:50 a.m. and 4-4:50 p.m. in Reynolds Recital Hall.

Sanborn, currently based in Canada, is a veteran session musician and a mainstay of the music scene in Toronto. He has toured or performed with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Diana Krall and many other jazz and pop artists. Sanborn is a member of the jazz faculty at the University of Toronto and travels frequently to appear as clinician and guest artist. His instructional books, CDs and DVDs have garnered universal praise for their insightful and entertaining approach to playing and teaching music.
