Marquette – The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will host a “Jewelry Making with Copper Findings” workshop on Thursday, March 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. in 404A Cohodas Hall at Northern Michigan University.

Jewelry maker Bonnie Badour will teach participants about caging a round bead with copper wire, using jigs to coil and twist wire and making jump rings. All wire and tools will be provided. Each participant will receive a pair of earrings or a pendant to take home.

Marquette – The National Alliance on Mental Illness-Alger/Marquette support group will meet on Thursday, March 16 at 7 p.m. in the Baraga Place Conference Room, 129 West Baraga Avenue, Marquette.

DNR and Michigan Tech unveil ANR North for August 2017

ANR NorthWhen Michigan Technological University (MTU) offered to partner with DNR to offer a new Upper Peninsula version of ANR, a pilot program was held in August of 2016. The pilot gave select educators an opportunity to participate and evaluate the program. They then assisted in planning and designing future ANR North courses. This August, ANR North will debut for the first time beginning the evening of Sunday the 6th and ending Thursday evening, the 10th. Sunday and Friday allow travel time to and from the western UP.

ANR North will be an introduction to the vast and magnificent natural resources of the western UP and include sessions on forestry, parks management, fish and wildlife, copper mining impacts and tribal resource management.  The fee for five nights lodging (single room), 13 meals, instruction and field trip costs is $350.  ANR North will be held at MTU’s Ford Center and is limited in size to 20 educators so expect it to fill up quickly.… Read the rest

Calendar – Education – “A Journey of Hope” with Laura Ling – Mar. 16

Marquette – Laura Ling, an award-winning journalist and TV/web host, will present “A Journey of Hope” on Thursday, March 16 at 7:30 p.m. in room 1100 Jamrich Hall at Northern Michigan University.

Ling made international news in 2009, when she and a colleague were arrested and held captive in North Korea for 140 days after attempting to report on the trafficking of women from that country. She and her sister, Lisa, co-authored a book about the experience titled “Somewhere Inside: One Sister’s Captivity in North Korea and the Other’s Fight to Bring Her Home.”
