DNR’s 10th Summer Teachers Academy More Popular Than Ever!

RAM Camp group gets lectured on the rocky path they walk.This summer, July 9-14, the DNR will offer its 10th Academy of Natural Resources (ANR) and registrations are at an all-time high. One class is already closed and the others are 50% of capacity. “Even though July seems like a long way off, there is a really increased interest this year” said Kevin Frailey, ANR Coordinator. “Our registrations aren’t usually this high until around April.” Known as ANR (or RAM Camp), the summer academy is a week-long immersion into natural resources management and environmental education. Held at the DNR’s Ralph A. MacMullan Conference Center on the north shore of Higgins Lake, the RAM center offers an amazing retreat site for education workshops such as ANR. Five nights lodging, fifteen meals and instruction are included for only $395. Scholarships from Novi Chapter Safari Club International can lower the price to $295. Marquette – Northern Michigan University’s music department will host a piano concert by visiting artist Craig Randal Johnson on Tuesday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Reynolds Recital Hall on the campus of NMU.

Johnson is the conductor and artistic director of Minnehaha Music in Minnesota. He has performed as a piano recitalist across the United States as Finlandia Foundation’s “Performer of the Year.” Other appearances include the Amsterdam Chamber Series in New York, the Rock Church, Sundin Hall, the Hill House, the Landmark Center in St. Paul and various concerts sponsored by Finnfest USA. In January, he played the program “Piano Music from Finland” in Minneapolis, honoring 100 years of Finnish independence.

Marquette – The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will host a photography workshop on Wednesdays: March 22, April 26, May 24 and June 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day in room 404A of Cohodas Hall at Northern Michigan University.

Photographer Kim Marsh will address digital camera use, photographic techniques and composition. Classroom assignments, in-class critiques and hands-on activities will be included. Individuals with any level of photography experience are welcome to attend the workshop.

Calendar – Music – Free Piano Concert to Feature Finnish Music – Mar. 14

Marquette – A free piano concert to feature music of Finnish composers will be offered on Tuesday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Reynolds Recital Hall on the campus of Northern Michigan University.

This concert is jointly sponsored by Northern Michigan University’s Department of Music and the League of Finnish-American Societies UP Chapter Finlandia Foundation Affiliate with the help of a grant from Finlandia Foundation National. The concert will include works by Sibelius, Kuula, Rautavaara, Madetoja, Kokkonen, and Melartin.

The Rautavaara work, titled “Ikonit” (Icons) will have descriptions of the icons that inspired the composer. They will be read in Finnish by Tanya Stanaway of Ishpeming with written English translations for the audience to follow along. Finland declared its independence from Russia in 1917. This concert is one of the events around the world that celebrates this centennial year.
