Marquette – Dawn Dott Dance Studio will present a fundraising Dance-A-Thon on Saturday, March 11 from 6 p.m. to midnight at the Masonic Center in downtown Marquette. Registration for those wishing to dance will be from 5 to 6 p.m.

Taylor Havican, a Marquette Senior High School student, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The Dance-A-Thon is being put on by the Dawn Dotts Booster Club. A portion of the proceeds will go to help with Havican’s medical costs. The event will feature a variety of dance forms from freestyle to hip-hop.

General admission is $10 and the full participation fee is $30. There will be raffle prizes and concessions are available. … Read the rest

Calendar – Music – Traditional Music Jam – Mar. 11

Marquette – A traditional music jam will be held on Saturday, March 11 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Community Room of the at the Peter White Public Library.

Join other musicians for a community jam session celebrating traditional folk music. Acoustic musicians and vocalists are invited to bring their instruments for an informal gathering to play music together. A limited quantity of sheet music is available for use for those not familiar with the songs.

A music jam is not about performing, but a chance for people interested in traditional acoustic music share their love of music and learn a new song or instrumental technique. Listeners and singers are always welcome.

Marquette – A Folk Music School Preview and a Coffee House Concert, to help promote the Folk Music School, will be held on Saturday, March 11 at Northern Michigan University.

From 12 to 12:50 p.m., the workshops “Creative Process for Songwriters” with Sue Demel, “Basic Folk Guitar” with Dan Truckey and “Accordion 101” with Tim Clancy will be offered. From 1 to 1:50 p.m., the workshops include “Improv Vocal” with Sue Demel, “Fiddle 101” with Barb Rhyneer and “Basic Music Recording and Production” with Mark Shevy. From 2 to 2:50 p.m., the workshops include “Folk Percussion” with Tim DeMarte and “Workshopping that Song” with Dan Truckey. All workshops are free and open to all ages. They will be held in the University Center.

Marquette – The Zonta Club of the Marquette Area spring fundraiser, “NAILED IT-Cocktails and Crafts” will be held on Saturday, March 11 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Jacobetti Center at Northern Michigan University.

Participants for “Nailed It” will spend an afternoon of craft making and cocktails. Choose from a variety of workshops including arm knitting a scarf, painting a canvas, floral arrangements, food preparation, jewelry making and more.

Ticket prices begin at $35 and includes one workshop with an option to add a second, a chance to win prizes, and a swag bag and complimentary appetizers. A cash bar will be available.

Proceeds from the event will benefit grants and scholarships given by Zonta to the community. Some of these grants were given to Big Brothers Big Sisters, Partridge Creek Farm, YMCA, Great Lakes Recovery, and many others.
