Marquette – The Marquette Senior High School Varsity Dance Team invites kindergarten through 8th grade students to attend the Kid’s Clinic on Saturday, February 18 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Marquette Senior High School gym.

Students will learn a routine that they are invited to perform with the MSHS Dance Team at the Not Just A Halftime Show on February 27 at 7 p.m. There will be a snack provided and students will leave with a special gift from the MSHS Dance Team. The cost is $20 per student and includes free admittance to the Not Just A Halftime Show and one adult ticket for the Not Just A Halftime Show

Black History Month Presentations at NMU

Marquette, Michigan – Carter Wilson, head of Northern Michigan University’s Political Science Department, will present two public lectures as part of Black History Month. One will compare the impact of progressive and reactionary intellectual traditions on social inequity and racial oppression. The other will focus on race and the U.S. justice system.

Both presentations are scheduled from 5-6:30 p.m in 1322 Jamrich Hall on their respective dates.

“The Myth of American Exceptionalism” will be held Thursday, Feb. 16. Wilson argues that the progressive intellectual tradition led to improvements related to social inequality and racial oppression, whereas the reactionary tradition enabled and promoted social inequality and racial oppression.

“Is the U.S. Criminal Justice System Racist?” will be held on Thursday, Feb. 23. Wilson will review the scholarly literature on race and the justice system and let the audience reach its own conclusion.… Read the rest

Gwinn – The Jackpine 30 Sled Dog Race will begin on Saturday, February 18 at 10 a.m. at Larry’s Family Foods in Gwinn.

The race will follow a 26 mile course and conclude at First Baptist Church on North Billings Street in Gwinn. Awards will be presented at the church at the completion of the race.

Marquette – Warm up in the middle of an Upper Peninsula winter with the pleasant sounds of the ukulele! Yooper Uke Week 2, February 14 through 18, sponsored by Hiawatha Music Co-op and presented by “Michigan’s Ukulele Ambassador” Ben Hassenger.

Ukelele Workshops will be offered on Saturday, February 18 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 201 E. Ridge Street, Marquette.

Marquette – The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association will host a Story Time on Saturday, February 18 from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Youth Atrium of the Peter White Public Library.

There will be Valentine stories, and kids will get to make their own special Valentine’s crafts to take home.
The event is free and open to all ages.

Gulliver – The McDonald Lake Ice Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, February 18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, February 19 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Gulliver.

The Family oriented Ice Fishing Derby is $5 for an adult entry and free for children. 100% of the entry fees will be awarded as prize money. Separate prizes will be awarded to children.
