Marquette – A WWI Remembered Film, “A Very Long Engagement” will be shown on Monday, February 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library.

This French drama is about Mathilde, a young woman who suffered from polio as a child, and her fiance Manech, a soldier sent to the battle of the Somme. When told that Manech along with four other soldiers has been sent to No Man’s Land to be killed by the Germans because of self-inflicted wounds to avoid combat, Mathilde sets out on a journey to find her fiancé and discover what has really happened. This color film in French with English subtitles is rated R and runs for 133 minutes.

Calendar – Community – Gift of Life Michigan Campus Challenge Organ and Tissue Donor Drive Competition – Feb. 13, 15, 20

Marquette – Northern Michigan University will participate in the annual Gift of Life Michigan Campus Challenge, an organ and tissue donor drive competition. The NMU Volunteer Center will host registration tables across campus on Monday, February 13 from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Learning Resource Center circulation area; Wednesday, February 15 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Halverson lobby; and Monday, February 20 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the air band competition in the Jamrich Hall lobby.

NMU students, alumni and other supporters can register to become an organ donors. The Gift of Life Michigan Campus Challenge is the largest college-based organ donor drive in the nation and has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for its success. In its 13-year history, the Campus Challenge has resulted in more than 38,000 people adding their names to the Michigan Organ Donor Registry.… Read the rest

NMU Competes in Gift of Life Campus Challenge

Marquette, MI – Northern Michigan University is among 14 state schools participating in the annual Gift of Life Michigan Campus Challenge, an organ and tissue donor drive competition. NMU students, alumni and other supporters can register to become an organ donor here until Feb. 22. NMU was in second place in the real-time results as of Feb. 10.

“I am personally inspired to be a donor because of the about 3,000 people who are waiting for a life-saving organ in Michigan today,” said Gift of Life Challenge NMU student leader Georgia Harrison. Nationwide, the number stands at about 114,000. People die waiting every single day because the number in need greatly outpaces the organs available. I know that the decision to someday donate organs could save up to eight lives.”

Casperson welcomes students from Bay College to the Senate

LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Tom Casperson, R-Escanaba, welcomed students and faculty from Bay College, located in Escanaba, to the Senate on Wednesday.

“I always appreciate the opportunity to meet with students from the U.P. when they come to Lansing to visit the state Capitol,” Casperson said. “I enjoyed meeting with them and discussing the many issues facing our state. This next generation of Michiganders is intelligent, civically minded, and engaged, and our state has a bright future because of them.”

The group expressed their appreciation for Casperson taking the time to visit with them during their trip, and for helping to make it a great experience.

Barb Knox, yoga instructor and Northern Michigan University faculty member, will discuss and demonstrate yoga as a tool for improving mental health.
