The Iditarod routinely kills young, healthy dogs and it has to stop. Six dogs died in 2009, bringing the total known to 142. The dog deaths average nearly 4 a year. Two dogs died in this year’s Yukon Quest.

The distance is too long, and the conditions and terrain too grueling for the dogs. They are among the best-conditioned dogs in the world due to their training year-round, yet only about half of the dogs make it to the finish line. They are dropped due to injury, illness, or exhaustion. One musher of the eight who scratched so far was running with only half of the 16 dogs she started with. Another scratched after one of her dogs collapsed while running. All but one, who was injured, scratched “based on the best interest of” their dogs, which tells me that they cannot make it.

There are laws in at least 38 states against over-driving and over-working animals, which is exactly what the Iditarod does. The Alaska cruelty statue that would apply to the sled dogs was changed in 2008 to exempt them.

When the dogs are not racing or training they are each kept on a short chain, attached to their small enclosure; kept away from interacting with their kennel mates. This is considered inhumane and illegal in many communities.
Here, for example, is Dallas Seavey’s kennels: http://photos.igougo.com/pictures-l9709-p2-Willow_photos.html#541768.

Bishop Mark was a great role model, friend, spiritual leader and uncle. His first and foremost concern in life was thinking of others and helping others. He was a faithful servent always and someone we will keep close in heart always. Thanks Bishop Mark for all you kindness and love here on earth. We will miss you greatly but will carry on in your memory...until we meet again. Love, hugs and prayers. XO

Hi Everyone,
My name is Theresa Dube-Stephan. I used to be a member of the Gwinn Ladies Auxiliary and I was also a bar tender for the men's club when Jake Winters was the bar manager. You might remember my grandparents who used to come there quite often in the summers. Everett and Angie Sundberg or my parents, Lane and Judy Dawson. They owned Debbi Tours. I am writing to see if I can get the recipe for your pasty crust so I can make my own pasties. I sure miss the one's I used to get fresh from your kitchen. My two son's just loved them. I moved out West to Nevada and after eleven years I've moved back to Wisconsin where my two sons now live with their families. I'm still too far away to come and get them so I'd like to make them myself. If that would be alright I would really appreciate it if you could email me the recipe. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Theresa Dube-Stephan

On Saturday, May 14, White Water will perform at 1:00 and again at 2:30 at the Iron Industry Museum in Negaunee. Light refreshments will be served. There is new seating in the performance space, but this concert is popular so come early for premium seating. Admission is free. Dean and Bette Premo have made music as White Water since 1985. For the special museum open house concerts, White Water will be joined by Houghton-based “fiddlers” Emma and Carrie Dlutkowski and their mother Susan (piano). Despite their young ages Emma and Carrie are long-time members of the U.P. classical music scene and for the last three years they have been frequent performers with White Water. In addition to old and new White Water favorite tunes and stories, the ensemble will feature the music of Konsta Jylhä (1910-1984), a folk-virtuoso who made the traditional pelimanni-style folk music a Finnish cultural phenomenon. The current Kaustinen Finland folk-virtuoso violinist, Mauno Järvelä, has made it his life work to document and make available to fiddlers worldwide the music of Konsta Jylhä. Järvelä provided the music to White Water. The White Water ensemble will have at least a dozen instruments on stage including hammer dulcimers, fiddles, mandolins, guitars, piano, and more.

Sorry Mr. President, but Wisconsin can't come along with you. Our new governor has already dashed our chances for having our spur of the new high speed rail dream with all its possibilities, avenues, and jobs. Walker has given away our share of the railway stimulus money, and California has grabbed our missed opportunity. Wisconsin will be left behind for at least four years, and then we will be trying to correct his devastation.
