Michelle Branch Readying First New Solo Album Since 2003

August 22, 2011

Ah yes, I remember Michelle Branch when her single “Everywhere” came out in 2001 and where it got stuck in my head right along with Weezer for most of that summer.

Well after some time in country band The Wreckers, she’s back with a new album called “West Coast Time” and a new single “Loud Music.”  I highly suggest it but warn that it could get stuck in your head for a while!

2011 Negaunee Football takes another step towards the season with annual scrimmage against Escanaba

August 22, 2011

Negaunee, Mich. - The Negaunee Miners wrapped up their second week of practice by hosting the Escanaba Eskymos at Miners Stadium on Friday August 19th.

The scrimmage, an annual event between the two schools, is a great opportunity for coaches to see their players at game speed.  Varsity Head Coach Paul Jacobson says it’s an event he looks forward to every year for several reasons, including an opportunity to see who is ready for the season.

“We use this as an opportunity to asses where our guys are at both physically and mentally” Jacobson said while witching the Freshman and J.V. teams.  “We like to see the kids have the chance to hit someone else other than their teammates which gets old after two weeks, but we also get to see who has the intensity and the work-ethic we as coaches want to see out of our guys.  A great practice player doesn’t always make the best player Friday nights; so we look at who’s mentally sharp and intense…because if you can get prepared to scrimmage well, you can easily get ready for the real thing.

About 150 people turned out to watch the scrimmage, something that was also noted by the head coach.  “Our support is tremedous in this town, we’re so fortunate that the community wraps itself around all our kids do both in athletics and in academics.  Our kids get involved and that makes our job as teachers and coaches that much easier and that much more fun.  We’re ready for a fun year.”

Negaunee opens the season Friday night August 26th against the Manistique Emeralds.  Mark Evans and Gregg Nelson will have the call again this year for Negaunee football on “Football Night in Negaunee” on Sunny 101.9 WKQS.

Health Tip – Aug. 16 – The Benefits of a High Protein Diet

August 22, 2011

High protein diets increase in the amount of proteins one consumes on a daily basis. Though there is some debate about the effectiveness of such a diet plan, many nutritionists and dieters seem to think that it is a great weight loss strategy.

Proteins make you feel fuller quicker and for a longer amount of time. This enables you to go through your day without feeling hungry and reaching for unhealthy snacks. The calories in the protein will last longer, meaning you will eat less of them in the long run, which allows you to lose weight more easily.

Proteins are also an essential nutrient that your body craves. They are the building blocks to all of your cells and they are vital for growth, especially the growth of muscles and bone. Proteins are also important because they can boost your immune system and reduce your risk for chronic diseases.

Dietitians suggest that high protein dieters gradually increase their protein intake over the course of a week, to ease the body into the change. The recommended amount of proteins to consume per day varies from person to person, but is approximately 120 grams per day.

By balancing your protein intake with various food sources, you increase your body’s ability to accept the nutrients. It is also recommended that you compliment the higher levels of proteins with a nutritious diet that includes fruits, vegetables, dairy, grains, and physical activity. Consult your doctor or a qualified dietitian to see if a high protein diet is a healthy option for you.

Speech Time! Giving A Speech For A Wedding…

August 22, 2011

This Saturday I have to do something that I’ve never done ever…

And thankfully I don't have to wear this for it though!

I have to give a Best Man speech for my friend’s wedding.  I known my friend for twenty years, and it’s a bit mind boggling that it’s been that long.  Where did the time go?  Oh, over there?  Well I’ll go join time in the corner now…

Anyways, this speech thing, I don’t have anything written down, but I do have an outline in my head for it.  I think I’ve learned a few things about speeches of this sort from watching others.  Don’t let it go too long, don’t force the humor and never offend anyone at the reception.  Hopefully I stick to my own tips, those who know me know that I’m bad for going on tangents!

2011 Negaunee Miner football prepares for scrimmage with Escanaba, Mid Pen conference schedule

August 22, 2011

Negaunee, Mich – The 2011 Mid Peninsula football season kicks off on Friday August 26th as the Maize and Blue entertain Manistique in the traditional conference opener for both schools.

Head Coach Paul Jocobson starts his 12th season as the head of a team that has had tremendous success over the course of those dozen years, included a 13 – 9 record in the post season.  In 2010 Negaunee scored what many consider to be the upset of the entire MHSAA Playoffs; by getting in to the post-season with a  5 – 4 record and then defeating unbeaten Elk Rapids in the playoff opener 22 – 15 at Elk Rapids.

According to coach Jacobson, this years edition of the Negaunee Miners has a good balance of experience and youth.  “We’ve got some good skill players coming back with Tanner Uren at Quarterback and Tyler Beaumont back healthy in the backfield” Jacobson said following morning practice.  “I like the feel I’m getting from this group too, they come ready to practice and so far they’ve been willing to be coached which can sometimes be a challenge.  If we keep mentally tough I think we can have some success this year.”

Beaumont, a senior at tailback this season, says he anxious to get going after injuring a knee his junior year.

“I can’t wait to get out there on two healthy knees and see what we can do” Beaumont said.  “We’ve got experience in some good places like at quarterback and our line is really coming together so I think we can do some good things this season with the team we have here.”

Negaunee takes on Escanaba in a formal scrimmage Friday August 19th in preparation for their conference opener the following Friday.  The scrimmages will be at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM that afternoon

The Miners can be heard home and away all season long with Mark Evans and Gregg Nelson on Sunny 101.9 WKQS.

Getting Back Behind The Board For High School Football Season

August 22, 2011

I can’t believe it’s August, this means a few things for me here at Great Lakes radio.  One of the biggest things is that I’m coming close to working here for a year, which is really hard to believe it’s gone by so fast.  I started working at the beginning of the high school football season last year.

That’s the other thing about August, high school football is back!  What does that mean for me?  Well that means I’ll be working in some behind the scenes action here at the station.  Usually I board op on our sister station 98.3 FM WRUP for Ishpeming Athletics, but also I do work for Negaunee Athletics as well.

I’m really excited to start again, bring on the season!

…maybe except for the space!

Marquette, Michigan’s Farmers Market at The Marquette Commons building a great summer downtown diversion

August 22, 2011

Marquette, Mich. – Marquette has had may different versions of Farmers Markets through the years, but the one downtown at The Marquette Commons building has taken off like no other in recent memory.

Local growers, vendors and artists begin setting up by dawn every Saturday for the weekly market which runs from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM through the bulk of the summer.

The produce, baked goods and other items are all locally grown and prepared, most from all natural ingredients; and patrons can shop several areas for U.P. made jewelry, wood products and much more.

Almost every week the Marquette Farmers Market invites members of the local music scene to entertain the crowd, many of the groups and individuals are young up-and-comers on the Marquette music list of who’s who.

The Marquette Farmers Market also promotes the other Farmers Markets in Marquette County such as Negaunee, Skandia, Munising and others.

It’s a great diversion on a beuatiful U.P. Saturday in Marquette.
