Marquette – The UP 200 Dryland Dash will be held on Saturday, October 14 and Sunday, October 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day at the Marquette County Fair Grounds in Sands.

Dog teams of 2, 4 and 6, as well as single teams, will race daily. See dogs pulling people with scooters, wheeled rigs, and bicycles.The unique event is open to the public with no fee for parking or admission. Negaunee – The 12th annual Iron Oars Regatta, sponsored by the Upper Peninsula Community Rowing Club, will be held on Sunday, September 17 from 8 a.m. to noon beginning from the west end of Teal Lake in Negaunee.

Racing along the 3400 meter course toward the finish line on the east end of Teal Lake, college and community teams from the Midwest have been invited to compete in sweep rowing as well as sculling events.

Trenary – Great Northern Poultry and Livestock Connection (GNPLC) will have their last fur and feather swap and flea market of the 2017 season on Saturday, September 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Holmquist Feed Mill in Trenary.

A silent auction will run from 10 a.m. to noon. Donations for the auction will be accepted and appreciated. There will be a 50/50 raffle, concessions will be available, as well as a bake goods fundraiser.

GNPLC members may sell for free, and non-members pay $5 to sell. Membership is $15 per year/per family. Admission to the event is free to the public. All dogs must be on a lease. All poultry will be tested at 25 cents per bird.

Chatham – Transition Marquette will host the first session of a gardening series on Thursday, September 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the MSU North Farm in Chatham.

Marquette – The Chocolay Raptor Center will release two rehabilitated American Kestrels back to the wild on Wednesday, August 16 at 3 p.m. at Gentz’s Homestead Golf Course in Beaver Grove.

American Kestrels are the smallest falcons in North America. These two birds, a male and a female, were brought to the Chocolay Raptor Center as tiny chicks, still in pin feathers. For the last week they have been demonstrating their ample flight abilities, including hunting live crickets. They are ready to go. Phoenix, the peregrine falcon, will be there to support his cousins and present a short program on falcons. All are invited and there is no charge. … Read the rest

Calendar – Outdoors – Children’s Fishing Day at Seney National Wildlife Refuge – June 24

Seney – The 28th Annual Children’s Fishing Day will be held on Saturday, June 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Seney National Wildlife Refuge in Seney.

Young anglers are required to register at the Visitor Center before fishing. Fish entries will be accepted between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Visitor Center. Fishing stations will be set up along the Refuge’s Fishing Loop. A limited amount of fishing poles and bait are available for participants to use at these stations. Fishing is allowed from the shore along designated fishing pools and show pools. Lead sinkers are not allowed.

Activities and games for the whole family begin at noon in the Visitor Center and include arts and crafts, games, and activities. Certificates will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners for largest perch and pike in four age categories.… Read the rest

Marquette – The Marquette Regional History Center will offer “The Amazing Bike Path Tour” on Wednesday, June 21 beginning at 6 p.m. at the History Center on Spring Street in downtown Marquette.

This group bike ride with Jim Koski around Marquette’s bike path system, starting and ending at the History Center, will feature over a dozen stops, visiting everything from old lumber mills and railroad yards to a one-time city dump. See clues to Marquette’s history you may have ridden by and never noticed! Bring your bike and be prepared for a four to six mile ride.
