Fish Survey Crews Heading to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Munising, MI – Visitors this summer to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, on the south shore of Lake Superior, might see DNR staff surveying a number of waterbodies in the area. It’s all part of an effort to better understand what kind of fish make their home in these waters.

“Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore welcomes more than 1.5 million visitors every year, and many of those folks have questions about fish locally,” said Cory Kovacs, DNR fisheries biologist out of the DNR’s Newberry office. “We started sampling in 2017, and that information is important in helping us inform the public about what’s here, as well as in making decisions about managing those fish populations.”

In 2017, staff sampled Chapel Creek, Hurricane River, Miner’s River, Rhody Creek, Towes Creek and Mosquito River. This year, they’ll head to Grand Sable Lake, Chapel Lake, Beaver Lake, Sevenmile Creek and Lowney Creek.… Read the rest

Seney, Mich.– The Seney National Wildlife Refuge will be offering photo tours through the refuge on Thursday, June 21, from 8:15 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. Registration is required!

Do you have a small group of photographers (2-14) interested in going into the backcountry for a few hours? Schedule a tour with the Refuge as they may be available to work with your schedule for a 3-hour tour on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Music on Third Street Kickoff – June 21

Marquette, Mich.– Music on Third Street will kickoff this Thursday, June 21, along the sidewalks of Third Street in Marquette’s Downtown District from 6:00- 8:00 p.m.

Presented by the Marquette Downton Development Authority, each summer this eclectic mix of local musicians will play ‘Music on Third Street’ the third Thursday of every month, June through September.

Come enjoy some great tunes this summer and wander into more than 100 unique shops and restaurants that line Third Street, Downtown Marquette!

Seney Wildlife Wednesdays

Seney, MI – Tourists and locals alike love this tour! Join us Wednesday evenings in June, July and August for an evening guided auto tour of the refuge backcountry. The tour begins at 7 p.m. and lasts approximately two hours. We’ll be on the lookout for a variety of wildlife while sharing Refuge history and management practices. 29th Annual Kids Fishing Day at Seney National Wildlife Refuge

Seney, MI – Join us for Children’s Fishing Day – Catch the Excitement!  Saturday, June 23rd, 2018, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in cooperation with the Seney Natural History Association, invites you to participate in the 29th Annual Children’s Fishing Day.

On the day of the event young anglers are required to register at the Visitor Center before fishing.  Fish entries will be accepted between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at the Visitor Center.  Fishing stations will be set up along the Refuge’s Fishing Loop.  A limited amount of fishing poles and bait are available for participants to use at these stations.  Fishing is allowed from the shore along designated fishing pools and show pools.  Lead sinkers are not allowed.  Activities and games for the whole family begin at 12:00 p.m. in the Visitor Center and include arts and crafts, games, and activities.… Read the rest
