Gwinn – The Jackpine 30 Sled Dog Race will begin on Saturday, February 18 at 10 a.m. at Larry’s Family Foods in Gwinn.

The race will follow a 26 mile course and conclude at First Baptist Church on North Billings Street in Gwinn. Awards will be presented at the church at the completion of the race.

Gulliver – The McDonald Lake Ice Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, February 18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, February 19 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Gulliver.

The Family oriented Ice Fishing Derby is $5 for an adult entry and free for children. 100% of the entry fees will be awarded as prize money. Separate prizes will be awarded to children.

Marquette/Gwinn – The U.P. 200 will begin with an opening ceremony on Friday, February 17 at 6:30 p.m. in downtown Marquette. The race begins at 7 p.m.

Walt Lindala and Frida Waara will welcome representatives, sponsors and spectators to the race. The Marquette Male Chorus will give a special performance and many businesses will be hosting warm-up parties. The Midnight Run will begin at approximately 8:30 p.m. or about 30 minutes after the last team of the U.P. 200 leaves the chute.

Ishpeming – The SuperTour Nordic Ski Race Series will be held Friday, February 17 through Sunday, February 19 at Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming.

The SuperTour will be the first national Nordic ski race in Marquette County. It will set the precedent for future events. This event will bring top athletes and coaches to our area and it will put our community on the map as a recognized Nordic ski area.

Houghton – Continuing a tradition that began 95 years ago, Michigan Technological University will hold its annual Winter Carnival Wednesday, February 8 through Saturday, February 11. This year’s theme is “Snow Cascades Across the Decades.”

This year’s All-nighter begins on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and promises to be full of the usual food, music, fun and frantic activity that Winter Carnival is known for. In addition to putting the final touches on the month-long statues, the one-nighter competition begins at 4 p.m. and ends at 8 a.m. the next morning.

Other popular events include the Stage Revue on Thursday, February 9 at 7 p.m. at the Rozsa Center. Skits from seven student groups will poke gentle fun at all things Michigan Tech, including the iconic Husky statue.

Hermansville – The 12th Annual Young Trappers Workshop will be held on Saturday, February 4 from 8 a.m. Central Time to late afternoon at the Hermansville Community Center.

Youngsters and beginning trappers will have an opportunity to learn from expert trappers how to trap weasels, mink, muskrats and raccoons. Learn the tricks with trap lines and learn about trapping fur-bearing animals like beaver, fox and coyotes.

Calendar – Outdoors – NCLL Snowshoe Hike – Reservation Deadline – Feb. 2

Marquette – The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will host a snowshoe hike on the Vielmetti-Peters Conservation Reserve on Thursday, February 9 from 2-4 p.m. Reserve owner Kathy Peters will lead the hike on the 123-acre reserve.

Attendees should meet at the northwest end of the Lowe’s parking lot to carpool to the reserve and should dress for the weather with sturdy boots. A few extra pairs of snowshoes are available, if needed. Contact Carole Bard by calling 228-9367 to reserve snowshoes or for more information on the event.
