Gwinn – The Jackpine 30 Sled Dog Race will begin on Saturday, February 17 at 10 a.m. at Larry’s Family Foods in Gwinn.

The race will follow a 26 mile course and conclude at First Baptist Church on North Billings Street in Gwinn. Awards will be presented at the church at the completion of the race.

Marquette/Gwinn – The U.P. 200 will begin with an opening ceremony on Friday, February 16 at 6:30 p.m. in downtown Marquette. The race begins at 7 p.m.

Walt Lindala and Frida Waara will welcome representatives, sponsors and spectators to the race. Many businesses will be hosting warm-up parties. The Midnight Run will begin at approximately 8:30 p.m. or about 30 minutes after the last team of the U.P. 200 leaves the chute.

IshpemingThis Event Has Been Rescheduled for Wednesday, January 24 at 10 a.m.
The 131st Annual Suicide Hill Ski Jumping Tournament will be held on Tuesday, January 23 beginning at 6 p.m. at Suicide Hill in Ishpeming.

There will be bonfires, concessions, merchandise and tailgating. Ski jumpers from Finland, Norway and Slovenia (and maybe Russia) plus jumpers from our own U.S. Ski Team will be there.

Admission is per person. Tournament buttons can be purchased for $10 in advance and $15 at the gate; kids 12-years-old and under are free. Buttons will be available at the following outlets:

Ishpeming: Greater Ishpeming Negaunee Chamber of Commerce, Wilderness Sports, U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame, Elaine’s Place, Jasper Ridge Brewery, Jubilee Foods, Congress Pizza, Bucks Restaurant.

Negaunee: Super One Foods, Midtown Bakery.

Marquette: Down Wind Sports, Sports Rack.

Marquette – Snowfest, the inaugural kickoff to the first day of the winter semester will be held on Thursday, January 18 with free activities from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Academic Mall at Northern Michigan University.

The event will include the equipment demos on groomed trails on campus, a student organization fair, giveaways from area businesses, outdoor games, live entertainment, free treats, and hot cocoa.

Warren Miller’s extreme ski film “The Line of Descent” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. in Forest Roberts Theatre. Admission is $2 for NMU students and $8 for the general public.… Read the rest
