Calendar – Outdoors – Family Camp Expedition on Isle Royale Registration Deadline – May 1

Marquette – Registration is open until Monday, May 1 for a summer Family Camp Expedition on Isle Royale, Lake Superior’s largest island, presented by Northern Michigan University’s Seaborg Center. The program runs Sunday, June 25 through Friday, June 30. Karen Bacula, Marquette Area Public Schools teacher and Isle Royale camping veteran, will guide the expedition.

Participants will camp at Fork Wilkins State Park before traveling to Isle Royale for hiking, kayaking and exploration. Evening programs will feature island history, ecology and creative activities. Travelers will kayak to nearby small islands and watch for wildlife along the shore. They will also search for wildflowers and signs of the families who once lived there.

The trip is open to children ages 10 and older. At least one parent, aunt, uncle, guardian or grandparent must accompany each child. The cost is $400 for children ages 10-13 and $475 for 14 and older.… Read the rest

Calendar – Outdoors – NCLL North Country National Scenic Trail Hike Registration Deadline – May 1

Marquette – The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will host a hike on the North Country National Scenic Trail on Tuesday, May 9 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. beginning at the Marquette Welcome Center on U.S. 41 South in Marquette.

Lorana Jinkerson, president of the local NCT Hikers chapter, will lead the 3.5-mile walk to Lion’s Club Field in Marquette Township where the Iron Ore Heritage Trail has a trailhead. The new U.P. Land Conservancy Bayou Project will also be included.

Marquette – The 17th Annual YMCA Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, April 22 beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the YMCA of Marquette County on Fair Avenue in Marquette.

The event is open to all and includes a 10 mile, 10k, 5k and a 5K non-competitive walk, one-mile youth run and a toddler trot. Family fun, activities and refreshments will be provided throughout the morning.

Calendar – Outdoors – Vintage Ski Day at Marquette Mountain – Mar. 5

Marquette – Northern Michigan University’s Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame and Museum will co-host a Vintage Ski Day on Sunday, March 5 beginning at noon with a vintage ski race down Cliffs Ridge at Marquette Mountain.

Attendees are encouraged to bring old skis and ski clothing as they “go back in time” for the event. Racers will receive a handicap based on their age and the age of their equipment. A vintage costume fashion show will begin at 1 p.m. in front of the main lodge.

Vintage ski films will be shown throughout the day in the ski lodge. Ski trivia will be on monitors in the lodge and T-Bar. There will also be displays of ski equipment and memorabilia from the Snowboard Hall of Fame and Museum’s collection.

Marquette Mountain will donate $5 to the museums for each person who buys a day pass in a vintage ski outfit.… Read the rest

Munising – Valley Spur Taste and Glide will be held on Saturday, March 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Valley Spur Lodge in Munising.

Participates will be able to ski to two buffet tables on B Trail. Enjoy a buffet by fire pit and large buffet in the lodge. Music by Chris Valenti will be in the lodge. The cost is $20 per person and will cover food, skiing and snowshoeing.

Manistique – The City of Manistique Snofest will be held on Saturday, February 25 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Central Park in Manistique.

The Frosty 5K Road Race and Walk will begin with registration at 9 a.m. and the start of the race at 10 a.m. Little Jiggers Kids Ice Fishing Derby begins with registration at 9 a.m. with fishing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $5 per hole and there will be prizes. The Cardboard Classic begins with registration at 1 p.m. and the race at 1:30 p.m.

There will be free skate admission Sponsored by Manistique Kiwanis and YETI Key Club. Skate rental will be available for $2 per person.

“South, West, East, North – Push Your Potty at the 24th” is this year’s theme. All racers must be registered by 1 p.m. Spectator admission pins are $2 in advance or $3 on race day.

Big Bay – The Honey Bear Classic Ski Event will be held on Saturday, February 25 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Big Bay Pathway in Big Bay.

This family friendly event will highlight youth and adult races and activities, prizes, refreshments and a weenie roast. Have your photo taken with the local Honey Bear! Wear a shirt or hat that says Big Bay or Honey Bear for a special prize. Explore this unique trail on skis or snowshoes and, for the more adventurous, trek up to the scenic Ridgeline Trail.

The 6K Meditation Loop is great for beginner to intermediate skill levels while 7K Hidden Grin and 12K Bear Mountain Loops offer a more challenging trek. The Honey Bear 12K challenge will be timed and prizes awarded to those who come closest to their estimated times.
