Marquette – The Chocolay Raptor Center will release two rehabilitated American Kestrels back to the wild on Wednesday, August 16 at 3 p.m. at Gentz’s Homestead Golf Course in Beaver Grove.

American Kestrels are the smallest falcons in North America. These two birds, a male and a female, were brought to the Chocolay Raptor Center as tiny chicks, still in pin feathers. For the last week they have been demonstrating their ample flight abilities, including hunting live crickets. They are ready to go. Calendar – Outdoors – Fur and Feather Swap in Trenary – June 24

Trenary – Great Northern Poultry and Livestock Connection (GNPLC) will host a fur and feather swap and flea market on Saturday, June 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Holmquist Feed Mill in Trenary.

A silent auction will run from 10 a.m. to noon. Donations for the auction will be accepted and appreciated. There will be a 50/50 raffle, concessions will be available, as well as a bake goods fundraiser.

GNPLC members may sell for free, and non-members pay $5 to sell. Membership is $15 per year/per family. Admission to the event is free to the public. All dogs must be on a lease. All poultry will be tested and there is a fee for the test.

Calendar – Outdoors – Children’s Fishing Day at Seney National Wildlife Refuge – June 24

Seney – The 28th Annual Children’s Fishing Day will be held on Saturday, June 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Seney National Wildlife Refuge in Seney.

Young anglers are required to register at the Visitor Center before fishing. Fish entries will be accepted between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Visitor Center. Fishing stations will be set up along the Refuge’s Fishing Loop. A limited amount of fishing poles and bait are available for participants to use at these stations. Fishing is allowed from the shore along designated fishing pools and show pools. Lead sinkers are not allowed.

Activities and games for the whole family begin at noon in the Visitor Center and include arts and crafts, games, and activities. Certificates will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners for largest perch and pike in four age categories.… Read the rest

Marquette – The Marquette Regional History Center will offer “The Amazing Bike Path Tour” on Wednesday, June 21 beginning at 6 p.m. at the History Center on Spring Street in downtown Marquette.

This group bike ride with Jim Koski around Marquette’s bike path system, starting and ending at the History Center, will feature over a dozen stops, visiting everything from old lumber mills and railroad yards to a one-time city dump. See clues to Marquette’s history you may have ridden by and never noticed! Bring your bike and be prepared for a four to six mile ride.

Lake Linden – The 44th Annual Rice Lake Fishing Derby will take place on Sunday, June 11 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lake Linden-Hubbell Sportsmen’s Association, 51610 Rice Lake Road in Lake Linden.

It will be a family day of fun, including $1,500 in Fishing Prizes. Top prize is the largest fish by weight, which will receive a $500 certificate from Dunham’s Sports in Houghton, Mich.

10 cent raffles begin at 1 p.m. There will be $500 in prizes, courtesy of Copper Country businesses. Lunch and refreshments will be served. Registration is $5 for adults, $3 for juniors, $1 for children. … Read the rest

Rapid River – The Hiawatha National Forest, together with numerous partners and volunteers, will sponsor the 26th Annual “Kids Fishing Day” on Saturday, June 10 at the Camp 7 Lake Campground in Rapid River.

This free, fun-filled day includes a casting contest, raffle prizes, minnow races, face painting, free food, and two fishing ponds for kids ages 12 and under. Professional Fisherman Greg Karch will be there with his “Backyard Bass” gear and will teach youngsters how to cast. Smokey Bear will be there as well. The first 300 children who attend will receive a free goodie bag with items donated by fishing tackle manufacturers. There will be abundant raffle prizes for the youngsters which include fishing rods, tackle boxes and other outdoor items.
