Marquette – The 70th Annual Marquette Christmas Bird Count will be held on Saturday, December 16 beginning at 8 a.m. at Mattson Park in Marquette’s Lower Harbor.

Calendar – Outdoors – Chocolay Raptor Center to Release Northern Goshawk in Big Bay – Nov. 28

Big Bay – The Chocolay Raptor Center will release a rehabilitated northern goshawk on Tuesday, November 28 at 11:45 a.m. at Powell Township Elementary School in Big Bay.

The hawk flew into a window and was found Friday next to the school, stunned and concussed. The teachers rescued the hawk, and notified the CRC. The students will participate in the release as an educational event. The public is welcome to attend the release.… Read the rest

Marquette – The UP 200 Dryland Dash will be held on Saturday, October 14 and Sunday, October 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day at the Marquette County Fair Grounds in Sands.

Dog teams of 2, 4 and 6, as well as single teams, will race daily. See dogs pulling people with scooters, wheeled rigs, and bicycles.The unique event is open to the public with no fee for parking or admission. Negaunee – The 12th annual Iron Oars Regatta, sponsored by the Upper Peninsula Community Rowing Club, will be held on Sunday, September 17 from 8 a.m. to noon beginning from the west end of Teal Lake in Negaunee.

Racing along the 3400 meter course toward the finish line on the east end of Teal Lake, college and community teams from the Midwest have been invited to compete in sweep rowing as well as sculling events.

Trenary – Great Northern Poultry and Livestock Connection (GNPLC) will have their last fur and feather swap and flea market of the 2017 season on Saturday, September 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Holmquist Feed Mill in Trenary.

A silent auction will run from 10 a.m. to noon. Donations for the auction will be accepted and appreciated. There will be a 50/50 raffle, concessions will be available, as well as a bake goods fundraiser.

GNPLC members may sell for free, and non-members pay $5 to sell. Membership is $15 per year/per family. Admission to the event is free to the public. All dogs must be on a lease. All poultry will be tested at 25 cents per bird.

Marquette – The Chocolay Raptor Center will release two rehabilitated American Kestrels back to the wild on Wednesday, August 16 at 3 p.m. at Gentz’s Homestead Golf Course in Beaver Grove.

American Kestrels are the smallest falcons in North America. These two birds, a male and a female, were brought to the Chocolay Raptor Center as tiny chicks, still in pin feathers. For the last week they have been demonstrating their ample flight abilities, including hunting live crickets. They are ready to go. Phoenix, the peregrine falcon, will be there to support his cousins and present a short program on falcons. All are invited and there is no charge. … Read the rest
