Marquette – The Northern Michigan University music department will host a concert featuring Yale Storm and Hot Pstromi on Tuesday, October 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Reynolds Recital Hall on the NMU campus. This free concert is part of the NMU music department’s Guest Artist Series.

Bandleader Yale Storm founded the group after conducting extensive field research in Europe and the Balkans among the Jewish and Rom communities. Hot Pstromi’s sound has influences of traditional klezmer, new Jewish music, Gypsy, khasidic, world beat and Balkan music. … Read the rest

Calendar – Music – “Dido and Aeneas” at Northern Michigan University – Oct. 15

Marquette – The Northern Michigan University music department will present a screening of “Dido and Aeneas”, performed by the Royal Opera and Royal Ballet in London, on Sunday, October 15 at 5 p.m. at the Forest Roberts Theatre on the campus of NMU.

“Dido and Aeneas” is an opera that tells the tale of the queen of Carthage, Dido, and Aeneas, a Trojan refugee prince. When Aeneas and his crew become shipwrecked in Carthage, he and the queen fall in love. In the meantime, witches plot Dido’s destruction.

Admission is $10 for adults and free for anyone under 18, along with NMU students, faculty and staff with ID. … Read the rest

Calendar – Music – Traditional Music Jam – Oct. 14

Marquette – A traditional music jam will be held on Saturday, October 14 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Community Room of the at the Peter White Public Library.

Join other musicians for a community jam session celebrating traditional folk music. Acoustic musicians and vocalists are invited to bring their instruments for an informal gathering to play music together. A limited quantity of sheet music is available for use for those not familiar with the songs.

A music jam is not about performing, but a chance for people interested in traditional acoustic music share their love of music and learn a new song or instrumental technique. Listeners and singers are always welcome.

Calendar – Music – Rock the FRT – Oct. 14

Marquette – Rock the FRT will be held on Saturday, October 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Forest Roberts Theatre on the campus of Northern Michigan University.

Six bands will compete for the local title and a cash prize of $300 for first place and $200 for second place at this “battle of the bands” event. Audiences can expect to hear a range of music, from metal to folk rock, with a mix of originals and covers. Bands are given a four-song or 25-minute time limit for their sets.
The bands competing are DayDreamers, Now Society Fails, Tease, Joel & The Good Boys, Heel Click and Our Last Vision.

Tickets are $15 for the public, $10 for students and $5 for NMU students. Tickets are available online at tickets.nmu.edu or at any NMU EZ Ticket outlet. Marquette – Enjoy an evening concert on Friday, October 13 at 7 p.m. and afternoon workshop on Saturday, October 14 at 1 p.m. with Wayne Henderson and Helen White in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library.

Wayne Henderson is a National Heritage Award recipient honored for his craftsmanship as a luthier and his renowned finger-style Appalachian guitar playing. A singer, fiddler, guitarist and tunesmith, Helen White has toured extensively with Wayne in the U.S. and Europe. Her compositions include works for theater and video projects as well as a Booklist honored recording of original songs for children.

For Friday’s concert there is a $5 cover charge for adults at the door. The Saturday workshop is free.… Read the rest

Marquette – An afternoon concert for all ages with Sean Gaskell will be offered on Saturday, October 7 at 3 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library.

Gaskell will give a performance and educational demonstration on the Kora, an ancient 21-stringed harp from West Africa. He will feature traditional songs that are the heart and soul of the Kora’s musical repertoire in addition to some of his own personal compositions.
