Marquette – Learn how people become addicted on Wednesday, May 16 at noon in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library.

John Lehtinen, M.D. will lead a discussion exploring the biological basis for addiction and recent major advances in treatment models. A question and answer session follows the presentation.

Dr. Lehtinen, on staff at Marquette General Hospital, is board certified in Addiction Medicine as well as Geriatrics, Sports and Family Medicine. He earned his doctorate from Wayne State University School of Medicine and did his residency at St. John Hospital in Detroit.

Attendees are invited to bring their own lunch or buy from the library café. Beverages will be provided. There is no admission charge and no pre-registration is required.

Marquette – In recognition of May as Mental Health month, the Oscar nominated film “The Squid and the Whale” will be shown on Tuesday, May 15 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library.

The film stars Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney, Owen Klein and William Baldwin. Based on the true childhood experiences of director Noah Baumbach, this film tells the touching story of two young boys dealing with their parent’s ugly divorce in 1980’s Brooklyn.
Released in 2005, the film is rated R and runs for 88 minutes.

Mary Ritter, therapist with Great Lakes Recovery Centers, leads the discussion analyzing what makes people anxious. An interactive activity using a cognitive behavioral tool is offered as well as general information on facts and percentages of people who suffer from extreme cases of anxiety. A question and answer session follows the presentation.

Marquette – In honor of May as Mental Health month, the public is invited to learn about the treatment model known as Assertive Community Treatment on Thursday, May 3 at 7 p.m. in the Shiras Room of the Peter White Public Library.

Lynn Johnson, MA, LLP, Clinical Supervisor for ACT at Pathways Community Mental Health will explore this intensive and highly integrated approach for community mental health service delivery, especially when combined with evidence based practices. This entails making decisions about how to provide care by integrating the best available evidence with practitioner expertise and other resources, and with the characteristics, state, needs, values and preferences of those who will be affected.

There is no admission charge.
