VAMC Open House and Tours in Iron Mountain on November 7

Iron Mountain, MINovember 2, 2018 – The Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain, Michigan, will be hosting a VA open house and tours on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 from 4 pm to 7 pm.  The Open House is open to all Veterans, their families, and the general public.  The medical center is located at 325 East H. Street in Iron Mountain, Michigan.

The Open House will highlight many of the state-of-the-art health care services and programs offered by the VA including caregiver support, hospice and palliative care, woman Veteran’s health care, VA’s new Whole Health Program, Traveling Veteran Program, audiology care, rehabilitation services, peer support and other recovery programs, suicide prevention, telehealth care, and more.

Brain Tumor Center Offers Tours

Marquette, MIOctober 25, 2018 – The Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center (UMBTC) at Northern Michigan University is hosting laboratory tours, followed by presentations by master’s students on their thesis projects. The tours will run from 5-6:30 pm Thursday, November 1, in West Science rooms 1610 and 1612. Refreshments will be served.

The thesis presentations will be held in the Mead Auditorium of West Science, room 2701.

Pain Management Workshop Offered in Newberry Starting October 23

Newberry, MIOctober 16, 2018 – Do you live with pain that has lasted longer than 3-6 months? The Chronic Pain Self-Management program is a six week program that teaches practical skills for living with (or caring for someone with) any type of health condition that causes chronic pain, such as Fibromyalgia, Back Problems, Arthritis, Lupus. The program focuses on self-care, learning new strategies for managing pain, and gentle exercises to help manage pain. Group meets for 2 1/2 hours once a week.

The program will be held in at the Chippewa-Luce-Mackinac Community Action Agency in Newberry on Tuesdays, starting October 23rd from 12:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. There is no cost to attend. REST is an originally designed educational course that provides respite training to adults and teens who want to offer care to those in need and provide assistance to their caregivers. As a REST companion (volunteer or paid), you give the gift of your time to provide a valuable service. As a REST trained companion/respite provider you will spend one-on-one time with an adult or senior, giving only as much time as you are willing and able to give. The ultimate goal of this training course is to assist individuals to become effective companions and respite workers by learning the three key steps of support: Prepare, Care and Connect.

Marquette, MIOctober 3, 2018 – Are you a family caregiver? FREE training is available!

Is the stress of caregiving affecting your health and disrupting your life? If so, attend the Powerful Tools for Caregivers series (PTC). This highly effective, self-care program for family caregivers, builds the skills caregivers need to better care for themselves as they provide care for others. Caregiver participants learn to minimize the potentially negative impacts of caregiving emphasizing self-care and empowerment.

Caregivers benefit from the PTC 6-week series of classes whether they are:

· Spouses/partners of an adult with a chronic condition

· Adult children of aging parents

· Long-distance caregivers

· In differing stages in their caregiving role

‘It’s On Us’ Week of Action at NMU Starts September 30th

Marquette, MISeptember 27, 2018 – Northern Michigan University’s “It’s On Us Week of Action,” which supports education, prevention and response efforts associated with relationship violence and sexual misconduct, will be held Sept. 30-Oct. 4.

The Week of Action will start with a screening of The Hunting Ground, hosted by NMU Campus Cinema, at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, in Jamrich Hall 1100. Below are other events scheduled for the week:

Monday, Oct. 1: “Kickoff” at table in Jamrich Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“It’s On Us” banner for students to sign
Distributing handouts with It’s On Us pledge inscribed
Distributing handouts on Title IX, NMU’s sexual misconduct policy, etc.

Tuesday, Oct. 2: “Consent” table at Jamrich Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Poster viewing: What is consent vs. What is not consent; participants will be able to add their own ideas and discuss the contributions of others
“What They Were Wearing” display from the Marquette Women’s Center; aims to show that what a person is wearing is never an invitation for sexual assault
