NAMI Educational Meeting May 20th

Marquette, MI – The National Alliance on Mental Illness-Alger/Marquette (NAMI) offers free, confidential peer support groups and educational meetings for individuals living with mental illness, and friends or families living with an individual with mental illness.

Our Monday, May 20th educational meeting will feature Dr. Lynn Johnson, Pathways Community Mental Health, who will will cover a variety of topics, including jail diversion and Clubhouse. Catholic Social Services Open House May 16th

Marquette, MI – Catholic Social Services of the UP serves approximately 1,500 people annually for mental health and substance abuse issues. We serve all faiths and welcome anyone in need. If you or someone you love who is struggling with life events that are emotionally draining or substance abuse issues, we encourage you to seek help.

Catholic Social Services of the UP have the professionals who can help you. We are available to answer any questions and invite you to visit our open house on Thursday, May 16th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at our out-patient clinic in Marquette located at 347 Rock Street or call us at 227-9119. Staff will be on hand at the open house to answer questions and there will be positive hands-on activities and a prize drawing to win a healthy coping skills basket and light refreshments.

Dementia Overview for Family and Friends Workshop May 14

Respite Education and Support Tools (REST) Training May 11th

Marquette, MI – Respite Education and Support Tools (REST) is an originally-designed educational course that provides respite training to adults and teens who want to offer care to those in need and provide assistance to their caregivers. As a REST companion (volunteer or paid), you give the gift of your time to provide a valuable service. As a REST-trained companion/respite provider you will spend one-on-one time with an adult or senior, giving only as much time as you are willing and able to give. The ultimate goal of this training course is to assist individuals to become effective companions and respite workers by learning the three key steps of support: Prepare, Care and Connect.

REST training is now available in Marquette, brought to you by the U.P. Area Agency on Aging/UPCAP. This is a nationally recognized certification which is eligible for Nursing and Social Work CEU’s and is open to the general public. In addition, there is no charge to participants for this training and lunch and materials are included.

The REST training will be provided on Saturday, May 11th, 2019. The training will be held from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (CST) with lunch and light snack included. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to class start time for check-in, pre-registration is required. NAMI Educational Meeting April 29th

Our Monday, April 29th educational meeting will feature Kevin McDowell, Pain Psychologist at UP Health System-Marquette. As a pain psychologist, Dr. McDowell focuses on the relationship between physical diseases and mental illness. For example, he might help someone with a back injury cope with pain and depression.

Childhood Obesity Discussed at Northern Michigan University

Marquette, MI – The next “Your Health” lecture at Northern Michigan University will be titled “Childhood Obesity: What We Can Do to Help.” Dr. John Bartlett, assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, will give the presentation at 7 pm on Thursday, March 21in Reynolds Recital Hall. The presentation will cover topics like the multi-factorial causes of childhood obesity, prevention and treatment at home and school, and what a medical team can do to assist in preventing the issue.

The Your Health Lecture Series is designed to provide the Upper Peninsula community with information about health and wellness. It is co-sponsored by Northern Michigan University, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, UP Health System–Marquette and Superior Health Foundation.
