Childhood Obesity Discussed at Northern Michigan University

Marquette, MI – The next “Your Health” lecture at Northern Michigan University will be titled “Childhood Obesity: What We Can Do to Help.” Dr. John Bartlett, assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, will give the presentation at 7 pm on Thursday, March 21in Reynolds Recital Hall. The presentation will cover topics like the multi-factorial causes of childhood obesity, prevention and treatment at home and school, and what a medical team can do to assist in preventing the issue.

Marquette Mountain Helmet Giveaway

Marquette, MINovember 15, 2018 – Marquette Mountain is scheduled to give away fitted helmets on Sunday, November 18th at 1:00 pm to the first 150 children who register for the Helmet Head Club during an event at the mountain sponsored by Upper Peninsula Health Plan, Eagle Mine and Upper Peninsula Health Systems of Marquette.

The event is brought to you by employees and volunteers from Marquette Mountain, Marquette Mountain Ski Patrol, Northern Michigan University Ski & Snowboard Club, NMU Athletic Trainers, UPHP, and UPHS.

The Helmet Head Project, previously called Heads U.P. on Safety, will educate kids and families on the benefits of wearing a properly fitted helmet. The first 150 kids 17 years or younger who register for the Helmet Head Club at the event will receive a fitted helmet. VAMC Open House and Tours in Iron Mountain on November 7

Iron Mountain, MINovember 2, 2018 – The Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain, Michigan, will be hosting a VA open house and tours on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 from 4 pm to 7 pm.  The Open House is open to all Veterans, their families, and the general public.  The medical center is located at 325 East H. Street in Iron Mountain, Michigan.

The Open House will highlight many of the state-of-the-art health care services and programs offered by the VA including caregiver support, hospice and palliative care, woman Veteran’s health care, VA’s new Whole Health Program, Traveling Veteran Program, audiology care, rehabilitation services, peer support and other recovery programs, suicide prevention, telehealth care, and more.

Brain Tumor Center Offers Tours

Marquette, MIOctober 25, 2018 – The Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center (UMBTC) at Northern Michigan University is hosting laboratory tours, followed by presentations by master’s students on their thesis projects. The tours will run from 5-6:30 pm Thursday, November 1, in West Science rooms 1610 and 1612. Refreshments will be served.

The thesis presentations will be held in the Mead Auditorium of West Science, room 2701.

Pain Management Workshop Offered in Newberry Starting October 23

Newberry, MIOctober 16, 2018 – Do you live with pain that has lasted longer than 3-6 months? The Chronic Pain Self-Management program is a six week program that teaches practical skills for living with (or caring for someone with) any type of health condition that causes chronic pain, such as Fibromyalgia, Back Problems, Arthritis, Lupus. The program focuses on self-care, learning new strategies for managing pain, and gentle exercises to help manage pain. Group meets for 2 1/2 hours once a week.

The program will be held in at the Chippewa-Luce-Mackinac Community Action Agency in Newberry on Tuesdays, starting October 23rd from 12:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. There is no cost to attend.
