VA Hosts Free Virtual Reality Arcade

Marquette, MINovember 2, 2018 – Veterans are invited to a free event at the Edge of Reality VR Arcade in Marquette on Friday, November 9 from noon to 4 p.m. (ET). The afternoon of virtual reality experiences is sponsored by the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center and will include pizza, pop, and snacks. The Edge of Reality VR Arcade is located at 333 W. Washington Street and is open to all who served in the military.
“We are inviting anyone who has served in the military to come and try out cutting edge virtual reality equipment and just hang out with fellow Veterans,” said Jordan Fox, a Peer Support Specialist with the VA and event coordinator.
Fox emphasized that Veterans do not need to be enrolled in VA healthcare to participate in this free event.
“It is also an opportunity to learn about local resources and programs for Veterans offered by the VA and the local community,” said Fox.… Read the rest

Roasted Pork & Sauerkraut Dinner October 11

Marquette, MIOctober 6, 2018 – We are excited to announce the return of the formerly known GUMC (Grace United Methodist Church) Sauerkraut Supper! For over 30 years this supper has been a very well attended meal consisting of Roasted Pork, a special recipe of sauerkraut along with mashed potatoes/gravy, and all the trimmings. There will be raffle baskets and entertainment for the diner’s pleasure or for those who may need to wait for seating.

Due to situations beyond their control the GUMC (Grace United Methodist Church) was dissolved and with it the loss of this supper. Several years have gone by and through perseverance some members of the group, have realigned itself through The New Free Store in Harvey MI and teamed with the Marquette Lions Club to bring back the meal . NMU Jazz Concert October 9

Marquette, MIOctober 6, 2018 – Northern Michigan University’s first jazz concert of the fall semester will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in Reynolds Recital Hall. It will feature the NMU Jazz Band and small ensembles performing classic works by composers Sammy Nestico, Fred Sturm, Miles Davis and more. Admission is free.

The NMU Jazz Band is directed by Mark Flaherty. It is a standard big band that performs concerts throughout the school year and has toured Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin. The group is the featured ensemble at the yearly NMU Jazz Festival and has performed with many prominent artists in recent years.

U.P. Heritage Center Presents Documentary Double Feature

Marquette, MIOctober 5, 2018 – A documentary double feature, Tradition Bearers and Finnish American Lives, will be screened at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct.12, at Northern Michigan University’s Jamrich Hall 1100. The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at NMU is hosting the event. Admission is free.

Celebrating its 35-year anniversary, Tradition Bearers sheds light on Finnish American history and folk art expressed through the folk artists living in the western Great Lakes region. The film blends oral interviews with historical photos to tell a story of Finnish Immigration and the life of a miner, lumberjack and homesteader.

Finnish American Lives, released in 1982, highlights the fragile community of memory connecting one with parents and grandparents. The documentary follows a three-generation Finnish family who works, celebrates, reflects and grieves together.

Filmmaker and NMU professor emeritus Michael Loukinen takes viewers on a journey of the true Finnish American history in the Upper Peninsula.… Read the rest
