‘Songs of the Voyageurs’ Concert at NMU

Marquette MISeptember 27, 2018 – In celebration of French-Canadian Heritage Week in Michigan, the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at Northern Michigan University will present notable French songs from the voyageur period as part of the Beaumier Heritage Concert Series.

Beaumier Center Director Dan Truckey and Upper Peninsula Folklife Award recipient Dave Bezotte will perform “Songs of the Voyageurs”.

Gries Hall at NMU

7:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

The voyageur period refers to the time around 1670 when French-Canadian canoe-paddlers established fur trade routes into and beyond the Great Lakes to do commerce with indigenous tribes. During the fur trade period, there were few roads in what is now Canada so the metaphorical highways of that time were the waterways of the Great Lakes, which voyageurs used to take long and difficult journeys to deliver cargo.… Read the rest

Parade of Nations 2018 – September 15

Houghton, MI – The 29th annual Parade of Nations, “Global Beats, International Treats,” will take place on September 15th, 2018. The Parade of Nations strives to promote worldwide culture and national awareness in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula through a community-wide annual event that includes a parade and a multicultural festival.

The parade begins at 11 a.m., making its way through Hancock across the Portage Lake Lift Bridge to Houghton. There’s a float contest featuring $600 in cash prizes. Everyone is invited to march with their country.

The gala procession winds up at Dee Stadium, an historic waterfront venue transformed into a global marketplace featuring dozens of food and craft booths and performers from around the world. Marquette, MI – TV6 will be hosting Business After Hours at the Ore Dock Brewery from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, August 30. 12th Annual Rendezvous at the Straits Powwow – August 24-26

St. Ignace, MI – A Rendezvous at the Straits French Voyager Reenactment and Powwow, a family event celebrating the history of the St. Ignace area, will take place at the Father Marquette National Memorial, just off US-2 west of I-75 in St. Ignace. Admission is $4.00 for elders, children 5 and under are free, and $5.00 for everyone else. This is really two events in one — part French voyager re-enactment and part traditional Powwow. Visit the French encampments, watch demonstrations, visit vendors displaying authentic wares, and enjoy the sights and sounds of Native dancing and drumming ceremonies.
