Art Speaks Interactive Display Beginning April 5th

Marquette, MI – Travel Marquette (Marquette County Convention and Visitors Bureau) welcomes Art Speaks: A Marquette Poets Circle Interactive Display, an exhibit of art and writings by local authors throughout April.

Each artwork is labelled with a QR code. Viewers can hear and see the authors online by scanning the QR code with a mobile phone.

Participating authors include Martin Achatz, 2019 U.P. Poet Laureate, Esther Ayers, Milton Bates, A. Lynn Blumer, Lynn Domina, Amber Edmondson, Kathleen M. Heideman, John Hilden, Gala Malherbe, Dr. Beverly Matherne, Janeen Rastall, Richard Rastall, Christine Saari, Alex D. Tadder and John Taylor.

The public is invited to a reception and reading by the authors on Friday, April 5th from 5 to 7 pm. To learn more visit the event page. The Marquette Regional History Center presents: NORWEGIAN FIBER ARTS WORKSHOP

Marquette, MI – This two-session workshop will start with a brief history of the rich textile traditions of Norway such as weaving, knitting and embroidery, showing examples of these arts. The classes will then concentrate on embroidery techniques. At the first class, attendees will be able to create several samples which could be made into an ornaments, coaster or pincushion using diamond, satin and star stitch in colorful wool yarn.

The second class will explore Hardanger embroidery which is a very intricate white on white cut thread technique. This sample can be fashioned into an ornament.

Attendees should bring a sharp embroidery scissors. All other supplies will be provided by the Instructor.  $75.00 registration fee, and limited space available. Pre-registration is required. The classes will be held at the Marquette Regional History Center on March 16 and March 23 from 10 am to 3 pm. Call MRHC at 226-3571.The instructor, Rosemary Michelin has been embroidering for over 40 years, and has attended Hardanger embroidery and weaving classes at the Vesterheim Museum in Iowa. 

Juried Art Exhibit Seeks Submissions

Marquette, MI – Northern Michigan University’s DeVos Art Museum is seeking submissions from artists for its “North of the 45th: 12th Annual Upper Midwest Juried Exhibition.” Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota residents living above the 45th parallel are eligible to participate. The submission deadline is Friday, March 22.

Work in all media is accepted and there are no size limitations. Artists can enter a maximum of five images for a $20 fee. All entries should be submitted to https://devos.slideroom.com.

The exhibition will run Monday, June 17-Friday, August 9. Awards for Juror’s Choice, Audience Choice and the Permanent Collection Acquisition Award will be presented.

New Exhibits Open at DeVos Art Museum

Marquette, MI – Northern Michigan University’s DeVos Art Museum presents an exhibition titled “April South-Olson: Points of Interest.”

South-Olson is an Upper Peninsula-based artist whose encaustic paintings—pigments mixed with hot wax—explore the human connection to the natural world. Within each landscape, Olson aims to capture a single moment in time. The transparency of the material reveals the present moment while illustrating its connection to the fleeting past.

DeVos Art Museum hours are 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday and Wednesday, noon to 8 pm Thursday and Friday, and noon to 6 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Hiawatha Amateur Radio Swap & Shop – February 2nd

Negaunee, MI – Hiawatha Amateur Radio Swap and Shop will take place on Saturday, February 2nd from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm Eastern Standard Time.
The doors open at 9:00 am at the Negaunee Township Hall, 42 M-35 Negaunee, Michigan. Set-up is from 7 am to 9 am Saturday. Entry fee is $5.00.

City of Marquette Art Awards

Marquette, MI – The Peter White Public Library will host the 22nd Annual City of Marquette Art Awards this Saturday, January 19th at 7:30 pm.

A reception will precede the event at 6:30 pm. Community members are welcome to attend.

DeVos Museum Hosts NMU Senior Art Exhibition

Marquette, MIDecember 7, 2018 – Northern Michigan University’s DeVos Art Museum is hosting the School of Art and Design’s Fall 2018 Senior Exhibition. The work of graduating seniors from all concentrations is being showcased. The exhibition will end with a closing reception from 7-9 pm on Friday, December 14. It is free and open to the public.

The following concentrations are represented: ceramics, computer art, digital cinema, drawing/painting, electronic imaging, furniture design, graphic communication, human centered design, illustration, jewelry/metals/blacksmithing, photography, printmaking, sculpture and woodworking. The reception will give students a platform to share their works and talk about their pieces. Light refreshments will follow.

Museum hours are 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday – Wednesday, noon to 8 pm Thursday- Friday, noon to 6 pm Saturday- Sunday, and by appointment on Mondays.
