Escanaba – Boy Scout Troop 411 will conduct a Bottle and Can Drive on Saturday, January 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Elmer’s Super One and Walmart in Escanaba.
All of the funds raised stay locally, with about half going directly to the boys to help them attend upcoming activities.

Marquette – An introductory Tai Chi Chuan workshop will be offered on Saturday, January 2 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Grace United Methodist Church, 927 W. Fair Avenue in Marquette.
Guest presenter martial artist Rick Pietila will review Tai Chi fundamentals and give several demonstrations.
Tai Chi is a gentle exercise developed by Chinese monks in the eighth century. It boosts the immune system, increases flexibility and improves balance.

Marquette – The Marquette American Legion Blues and Reds baseball teams will conduct a bottle and can drive on Friday, January 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Marquette.
The players will be going door-to-door. If homeowners are away, returnables may be placed in bags labeled Blues/Baseball and placed on front porches or steps. To schedule a pickup call 225-1690.

Marquette – The Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum in downtown Marquette will once again ring in the New Year with its annual Elementary Ball, on Thursday, December 31 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
There will be music, snacks, party favors and the annual countdown and lighted ball drop from the top of the museum. Admission is $4 for children, free for adults.

Marquette – Families and area youth can ring in 2010 family style at the YMCA in Marquette. Enjoy a Youth Bash on Thursday, December 31 from 11 a.m to 12:30 p.m. with a Noon Countdown, complete with a balloon drop, goodie bags and confetti.
Everyone is encouraged to get glamorous for a day of celebration and enjoy music, dancing, games, snacks and more. This event is free for YMCA members and only $2 per person for non members.

Marquette -The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will offer the class “The Botany of Wintertime” on Thursday, January 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. with participants meeting at 12:30 p.m. at the Berry Events Center to carpool or going directly to 600 Brickyard Road in Marquette Township.
NCLL member Kathy Peters will lead the presentation on her property, where the class will identify trees and shrubs. Wear warm clothing and bring available snowshoeing equipment.

Marquette – Folk singer, songwriter and author Carl Behrend will present the holiday tale “The Christmas Ship” on Wednesday, December 30 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library in Marquette.
Revisit the era when it was a holiday tradition for countless early 20th Century Chicago area residents to gather at the Clark Street Bridge and anxiously await the arrival of the “Christmas ship,” which was loaded with thousands of fresh cut trees from the northwoods of Michigan. Behrend tells the true story of the fierce winter storm of 1912 when, with his tree-filled ship covered in ice, the skipper and crew of the sailing vessel Rouse Simmons tragically sank not far from the shores of Two Rivers, Wisconsin.

Marquette – The Shiras Planetarium, located in the rear of Marquette Senior High School, will present the program “Live Sky Tour and ‘Tis the Season” on Monday, December 21 at 7:30 p.m.
The program begins with a short program, “Live Sky Tour” using the MS-8 Star Projector which displays one of the best indoor skies anywhere in the world. Learn about the stars and constellations of this season in complete realism.
The feature program, one of the most requested and famous shows produced by Lochness Productions, “‘Tis the Season” is back again as an annual tradition. Bring a family member and enjoy the spirit of the season with beautiful imagery, music, and information about this holiday season.
Doors open at 7:15 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students and senior citizens. Please no unattended children due to noise concerns.

Marquette – Marquette Electricians Midget AAA hockey team, along with the Marquette Masonic Lodge, will sponsor a pancake breakfast and silent auction fundraiser on Sunday, December 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Masonic Building, 128 W. Washington Street in Marquette.
Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for ages 5-12 and free for age 4 and younger. Tickets are available at Johnson Sports and the Second Skin Shop, or from any Electrician player or parent.

Marquette – The Peter White Public Library will host a community jam session on Sunday, December 20 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Community Room.
The session will begin with a special screening of the new, 60-minute documentary, “Always Been a Rambler.” The film celebrates 50 years of the New Lost City Ramblers, stars of the ’60s folk revival, who inspired younger musicians from Bob Dylan to Bela Fleck to explore American traditional music.
The jam session begins at 3 p.m. Bring your guitar, fiddle, banjo, bass, or sing along to old time folk music tunes by Peter, Paul and Mary, the Carter Family, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and others.
