The exhibit, “Niel Haapala: An Illustrated History of Louds Spur and Other Small Histories from Alger County,” features paintings and wood carvings the artist made to share stories, jokes and local history.

A reception will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the DeVos Art Museum.

At noon on Saturday, Stuart Baird of Calumet will give a woodcarving demonstration, and from 1 to 3 p.m. the museum will host an open house reception and family day, with art activities for children of all ages.

The exhibition and related programs are presented in conjunction with the Upper Peninsula Folklife Festival, presented by the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at NMU.

Haapala spent much of his working days in the logging camps, where he learned to carve wood and paint from a German prisoner of war. But it wasn’t until he retired that he found his artistic calling. Haapala’s work will be on display through September 26.

Featured items will include handcrafted jewelry, purses, scarves, bags, wood products, and general gift ideas. All items are handmade by disadvantaged artisans in developing regions around the world.

Fair Trade soup mixes, coffee, tea and a variety of chocolate items will also be available.

Each purchase helps artisans and growers maintain steady work and earn a sustainable income so they can provide for their families. A portion of each sale is also used to support educational and social services in their communities.

The theme of the event is patriotic, remembering all war vets, police and firefighters.
The buffet dinner will include Ed’s Croatian Chicken and Gary’s Country-Style Ribs. There will also be a DJ spinning tunes. World Youth Day Pilgrims will be selling pop and homemade desserts for their Spain trip. Beer and wine will also be available for purchase. Rain or shine, dogs and their guardians will hit the ground walking in an effort to raise money for Marquette County’s homeless pets. The Walk will begin at the Lower Harbor Park, with the option to do a 1 mile to 2 mile walk route on the bike path.

Following the walk, there will be Finish Line Fun, with doggie contests (including best costume, look alike, stupid pet tricks and more), pet vendor business and service booths, raffles, kid’s face painting and a good time visiting with all the Great Dogs and their people pals. Free refreshments for you and your pooch will be available.

Find out about one of Marquette’s oldest neighborhoods as local historian Jim Koski leads a walking tour through south Marquette, sharing the history of the area and telling the stories of the immigrant families who made south Marquette home. The walk will be going up and down several fairly steep hills.

The festival kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday with a Funky Folk Dance featuring the PasiCats and Conga Se Menne. Saturday’s activities run from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., headlining with Song of the Lakes who will perform at 7 p.m.

The festival, presented by the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at NMU, will include dozens of arts and crafts demonstrations, performances by folk artists from the region, two large demonstration tents, two performance stages for dance and song, a large dance floor and a chalk art area where people can create their own art.

The DeVos Art Museum will host an exhibit of folk art by the late Neil Haapala and a children’s craft area. NMU’s Dining Services will provide ethnic food tents and a beer tent.

A class will be held Thursday, September 9 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Northern Michigan University’s Jacobetti Center. It will include sessions on the principles of flight, weather, navigation and air safety.

On Saturday, September 11 at 8:30 a.m. students will meet at the K.I. Sawyer General Aviation Terminal for an extended one-on-one flight with a local pilot, practicing navigation and flight control.

The day will also include a tour of the air traffic control tower and tours of the aircraft maintenance facilities. Lunch will be served.

Cost of $20 includes supplies, lunch and a T-shirt. Preregistration is required, and students must attend both sessions.
