Marquette – Wild Birds Unlimited will host “American Birdlife,” a digitally projected visual presentation by wildlife photographer David Jesse McChesney, on Saturday, September 11 at noon and 2 p.m. at 2168 U.S. 41 W., Marquette.

McChesney will also sign copies of his book, “Muir Roots: At One with the Wild.” There will be prize drawings and refreshments.

Marquette – The South Marquette Walking Tour will be held on Saturday, September 11 beginning at 1 p.m. at Mares-Z-Doats on Division Street in Marquette.

Find out about one of Marquette’s oldest neighborhoods as local historian Jim Koski leads a walking tour through south Marquette, sharing the history of the area and telling the stories of the immigrant families who made south Marquette home. The walk will be going up and down several fairly steep hills.

Marquette – In accordance with Section 105 Schools of Choice language in Public Act 300, Marquette Area Public Schools announces openings in all grades for 1st Semester 2010-11.

The district will make every effort to accommodate building preference at the elementary level but retains the right to make the final building selection for student placement.

Applications may be obtained at any MAPS school building. Applications will be accepted through Friday, September 10, 2010. Enrollment deadline for students admitted is Friday, September 10, 2010

Marquette – Wildlife and nature photographer David Jesse McChesney will present “Canyonlands of Arizona and Utah” on Thursday, September 9 at 4:30 p.m. in Room 101-B of the Superior Dome. McChesney is the author of “Muir Roots: At One with the Wild.”

Calendar – Youth/Education – Air Academy Offered – Sept. 9 and 11

Marquette/K.I. Sawyer – Chapter 850 of the Experimental Aircraft Association will offer a two-day Air Academy for ages 14 to 17.

A class will be held Thursday, September 9 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Northern Michigan University’s Jacobetti Center. It will include sessions on the principles of flight, weather, navigation and air safety.

On Saturday, September 11 at 8:30 a.m. students will meet at the K.I. Sawyer General Aviation Terminal for an extended one-on-one flight with a local pilot, practicing navigation and flight control.

The day will also include a tour of the air traffic control tower and tours of the aircraft maintenance facilities. Lunch will be served.

Cost of $20 includes supplies, lunch and a T-shirt. Preregistration is required, and students must attend both sessions.

Marquette – Messiah Lutheran Church will host a Homework Night program for students in kindergarten through high school on Thursday, September 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church, 305 Magnetic Street, Marquette.

The Homework Night program provides mentors, school supplies, computer access, snacks and fellowship. The program is free and follows the Marquette Area Public Schools calendar. Marquette – Laughing Whitefish Audubon members, Mark and Joannie Hubinger, will present Panama: The Natural Destination on Wednesday, September 8 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library in Marquette.

They will offer pictures and stories from a 25 day birding trip in Panama, where scenery varied from cloud forest habitats to the oceanfront beaches.

Marquette – The French Program at Northern Michigan University will sponsor the French Table, an informal French conversation group, from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning September 8 in Room 111, the meeting room behind Starbucks on the lower level of the NMU library.

Calendar – Education – First Day of School in Ishpeming – Sept. 7

Ishpeming – Classes in the Ishpeming School District will begin September 7 with a half day of classes. All busing on the first day will begin approximately four hours later than the normal morning runs.

Ishpeming High School students are to report to the IHS auditorium at noon, where they will receive their class schedules. They will then report to their regular classes for the remainder of the day.

C.L. Phelps Intermediate School students are to report to the school gym at noon for general instructions, then report to their classes for the remainder of the day.

Birchview first through fourth grade students will begin school at 12:30 p.m. and be dismissed at 3:40 p.m. Students should report to their assigned classrooms. Parents who have not received their children’s assignments should call the school at 485-6341.

Parents of preschool, junior kindergarten and kindergarten students will receive a letter providing information on orientation, first day schedules and busing.

Marquette – Canoeing/Kayaking with Doc Fletcher will be offered on Tuesday, August 31 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library in Marquette.

Join Michigan author and canoeing/kayaking guru, Doc Fletcher, for a one hour photographic journey down selected Michigan rivers for a virtual paddling adventure.

Fletcher will share details of the trips included in his two books, “Weekend Canoeing in Michigan” and “Michigan Rivers Less Paddled.” Enter a drawing for a free canoeing/kayaking adventure. The drawing winner will have a choice of one of four liveried day trips: on the Grand River just south of Lansing; AuTrain River out of Munising; Fox River or Manistique River out of Germfask; or a Wisconsin River to be announced. One free trip will be awarded at the conclusion of the program.

Marquette – Bothwell Middle School in Marquette will host a 5th grade Super-start on Tuesday, August 31 and 6th grade Super-start on Wednesday, September 1 for parents only. This is a parent’s only opportunity to meet with their sons/daughters classroom teachers and learn about BMS.

Student schedule pick-up will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Bothwell gym lobby followed by a welcome session in in the gym. The parents will follow their student’s schedule to meet the teachers and end with a social period in the cafeteria.

Negaunee – The National Weather Service will host an Open House on Wednesday, August 25 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 112 Airpark Drive South in Negaunee Township next to the old Marquette County Airport.

The event is free and open to all. Tour an official National Weather Service Office and see how they generate weather warnings, forecasts, and products and distribute them via their webpage and on NOAA Weather Radio.

There will be activities for adults and children of all ages, ranging from a one hole weather safety miniature golf course, to the ever popular and crowd pleasing tornado generator. Featured will also be a three dimensional scaled snowfall climatology display, offering an opportunity to explore historic snowfall records in Upper Michigan.

There will be “take home” items such as posters, pamphlets, trinkets and brochures on basic weather safety, cloud pictures, and weather information resources.
