Marquette – The Uniting Neighbors in the Experience of Diversity Conference will present NMU’s visiting scholar from China, Jian Sha, speaking about the May 2008 earthquake in Sichuan Province on Monday, September 13 at 7 p.m. at the DeVos Art Museum.

The museum will display several pieces of art by surviving children and host a reception following Sha’s talk.

The event is free of charge.

Marquette – The Uniting Neighbors in the Experience of Diversity Conference will present Earl Smith, an expert on African-Americans in sports and the sociology of interracial marriage, addressing “Unity Through Sport: The Challenge of the 21st Century” on Monday, September 13 at 11 a.m. in the Great Lakes Rooms of the University Center at NMU.

Trenary – St. Rita Parish in Trenary will sponsor its annual fall festival Sunday, September 12 on the parish grounds.

Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. A harvest turkey dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parish hall. Tickets cost $8 for adults, $4 for children, and takeout will be available.

There will be games for children and adults, including the silver dollar game and bingo. Crafts and baked goods will be available for purchase. Live music will be provided by Maudie. There will be a raffle drawing at 4 p.m.

A work bee will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday to prepare the grounds and hall. Volunteers are needed for the bee and for food preparation.

L’Anse – A farmer’s market will be offered on Saturday, September 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the L’Anse Waterfront Park in downtown L’Anse.

The market will offer seasonal fruits and vegetables, herbs, shrubs and flowering plants, farm fresh eggs, bakery, crafts and flea market items.

Marquette – A Fair Trade Market will be held on Saturday, September 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and on Sunday, September 12 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 305 W. Magnetic Street in Marquette.

Featured items will include handcrafted jewelry, purses, scarves, bags, wood products, and general gift ideas. All items are handmade by disadvantaged artisans in developing regions around the world.

Fair Trade soup mixes, coffee, tea and a variety of chocolate items will also be available.

Each purchase helps artisans and growers maintain steady work and earn a sustainable income so they can provide for their families. A portion of each sale is also used to support educational and social services in their communities.

The sale is open to all and is handicapped accessible. For more information, call 225-1119.

Negaunee – Mitchell United Methodist Church in Negaunee will host a community Fall Back Festival on Saturday, September 11 from noon to 3 p.m. in the church parking lot.

Free hot dogs, chips, popcorn and pop will be available. There will be face painting for children, a carnival jump house and live music.

Marquette – The South Marquette Walking Tour will be held on Saturday, September 11 beginning at 1 p.m. at Mares-Z-Doats on Division Street in Marquette.

Find out about one of Marquette’s oldest neighborhoods as local historian Jim Koski leads a walking tour through south Marquette, sharing the history of the area and telling the stories of the immigrant families who made south Marquette home. The walk will be going up and down several fairly steep hills.

Marquette – The 2010 Upper Peninsula Folklife Festival will be held Friday and Saturday, September 10 and 11 at Northern Michigan University in Marquette. Most events will take place on the University Center lawn. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

The festival kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday with a Funky Folk Dance featuring the PasiCats and Conga Se Menne. Saturday’s activities run from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., headlining with Song of the Lakes who will perform at 7 p.m.

The festival, presented by the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at NMU, will include dozens of arts and crafts demonstrations, performances by folk artists from the region, two large demonstration tents, two performance stages for dance and song, a large dance floor and a chalk art area where people can create their own art.

The DeVos Art Museum will host an exhibit of folk art by the late Neil Haapala and a children’s craft area. NMU’s Dining Services will provide ethnic food tents and a beer tent.

Marquette – Local author Loraine Koski will have a book signing on Saturday, August 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Snowbound Books, 118 N. Third Street, Marquette.

Koski is the author of “Elwood’s War,” which features a collection of war-time letters written by Elwood Norr, who served in the U.S Air Force in World War II. Norr died in 1944 at age 19 when his B-17 bomber was shot out of the sky over Germany.

Marquette – Marquette resident Phil Niemisto will be the presenter for the final installment of the “In the Good Old Days” series on Wednesday, August 25 at 2 p.m. at Peter White Public Library.

Niemisto will entertain with stories of his happy childhood growing up in the city orphanage and working on its self-sustaining farm.

Niemisto purchases, plants and cares for the flowers in the downtown area, washes storefront windows and hosts the public congregate meal at the Marquette Senior Center five days a week.
