Marquette – “Random Experiments in Iron and Steel,” an exhibit of works by blacksmith Gordon E. Gearheart, will be on display March 1 through 29 at the Oasis Gallery in Suite U7 of the Masonic Square Mall, 130 W. Washington Street in Marquette.
A public reception will be held on Friday, March 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gallery.

Marquette – An artist’s talk and opening reception for “Hirokazu Fukawa: A Thought at the Edge of the Continent: Manchuria to Siberia 1942-1947″ will be held on Friday, February 26 at Northern Michigan University. The talk will begin at 4:30 p.m. in Room 165 of the Art and Design Building, with the reception at 6 p.m. in the DeVos Art Museum.
This new exhibit focuses on the story of Fukawa’s father, who was a sniper in the Japanese army during World War II and will be displayed through Sunday, April 4.
Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Marquette – In conjunction with the “Mostly Michigan” photography exhibit at Northern Michigan University”s DeVos Art Museum, Marquette-based photographer Jack Deo will give a lecture about his experiences collecting local historical photography on Friday, February 5 at 2 p.m. in Room 165 of the Art and Design Building.
Deo founded Superior View Gallery in Marquette with the acquisition of the original negatives from Childs Art Gallery. Since then, he has acquired dozens of negatives archives and the archive now contains more than 100,000 images.

Calumet – “Dolls and Dress Up,” an exhibit by photographer Stephanie Trevino, will be on display at the Vertin Gallery in Calumet February 5 through March 3, with a reception on Friday, February 5 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Refreshments will be served. Trevino’s exhibit features dolls and people in costumes to explore themes involving memory, identity, and relationships.

Marquette – The Lake Superior Art Association will present a program by artist Leila Martin on Tuesday, January 19 at 7 p.m. at the Marquette Arts and Culture Center on the lower level of the Peter White Public Library.
Martin will demonstrate the use of precious metal clay. Soft silver clay will be transformed into jewelry and fired to become hard metal.

Marquette – A new exhibit titled “Mostly Michigan: The Photography of D. James Galbraith” will open Monday, January 4 at the Devos Art Museum at Northern Michigan University. The exhibit will feature 55 vintage black and white photographs that capture the everyday lives of people in Michigan and Ireland.
Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and Friday, noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Houghton – The Michigan Tech Archives will premiere a new traveling exhibit about the life and times of Calumet photographer J.W. Nara at a special opening event on Wednesday, December 16 at 11 a.m. on the first floor of the J.R. Van Pelt and Opie Library at Michigan Tech University.
The exhibit will travel to libraries, museums and schools after its initial installation in Houghton. A free small exhibit catalog will be available which includes three Nara photograph postcards from the collection.

Marquette – A Reception for the Fall 2009 Senior Exhibition will be held on Saturday, December 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the DeVos Art Museum at NMU in Marquette.
Graduating Seniors present their work from all areas of the School of Art and Design, including ceramics, drawing/painting, digital cinema, electronic imaging, furniture design, graphic communication, human centered design, illustration, jewelry/metals/blacksmithing, photography, printmaking, sculpture and woodworking.

Marquette – Kyle Miron of CK Unlimited Photography will lead a discussion on photography and artistic inspiration on Tuesday, December 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Library in Marquette.
Miron will focus on the spiritual aspect of art, with an emphasis on photography. He will also share his journal entries and his portfolio of “spiritual” photos, and will present a slide show of his month-long trip to Scotland.

Marquette – In conjunction with “Highlights from the Permanent Collection, on view at the DeVos Art Museum at Northern Michigan University through December 12, Dr. Mitautoshi Oba will give a lecture about Japanese modern prints on Friday, November 6 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the museum.
Dr. Oba is Assistant Professor in the School of Art and Design at NMU as well as special guest curator for the “Highlights” exhibition.
