Marquette Symphony Orchestra Names New Principal Conductor, Announces 2018-19 Season

June 1, 2018

Marquette, MI – The Marquette Symphony Orchestra announced Wednesday that Octavio Más-Arocas has been named the ensemble’s new Principal Conductor.

Dr. Más-Arocas conducted the orchestra in a highly successful “Fantastic Tales, Sumptuous Melodies” performance in April. He will return to Marquette to begin the symphony’s 22nd season on Saturday, Sept. 15.

“I am thrilled and deeply honored about my appointment as Principal Conductor with the Marquette Symphony Orchestra,” said Más-Arocas. “Marquette is a very special place and the MSO is an exceptional orchestra. When I visited in April we made great music together and I felt an immediate connection with the musicians and the community. I am grateful by the courtesy shown to me by everyone I met and I am eager to continue deepening our relationship over the years.”

Dr. Más-Arocas also serves as the Music Director and Conductor of the Mansfield Symphony in Ohio, as well as Director of Orchestras at Ithaca College, New York, and Conductor-in-Residence at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz, California.

After gathering input from orchestra musicians and audience members, the Marquette Symphony board unanimously supported the recommendation of Dr. Más-Arocas.

The Marquette Symphony’s 2018-19 season includes: Opening night on Saturday, Sept. 15; A family-friendly Halloween concert on Sunday, Oct. 28; The annual holiday pops concert on Saturday, Dec. 8; The youth concerto competition winner concert on Saturday, Feb. 23; and the season finale on Saturday, April 13.

“I am looking forward to bringing exciting programs and new projects to Marquette,” said Más-Arocas. “Every concert will be an opportunity for us to show our patrons the wonders of our art, to touch and move their souls, and to give them a renovated thrill about their orchestra, their own Marquette Symphony Orchestra.”

Northern Michigan University will announce details about season tickets in the coming weeks.

An award-winning conductor, Dr. Más-Arocas has conducted orchestras around the world and has previously served as the Principal Conductor of the Green Bay Symphony, as Director of Orchestral Studies at Baldwin Wallace University Conservatory of Music, Lawrence University Conservatory of Music, and Interlochen Center for the Arts, as well as Resident Conductor of the Orquestra Simfonica da Unicamp in Brazil.

Funding for the Marquette Symphony Orchestra is provided in part by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts. The orchestra is an equal opportunity organization.
