Grease is the word July 11-15, 18-22, & 25-29. The Lake Superior Theatre proudly opens the season with one of the most performed musicals in the world, Grease! Under the direction of Dave Dagenais and choreographed by Jill Grundstrom, assisted by the artistic team who brought us The Producers, Spamalot, and Pippin, Grease will open the Frazier Boathouse with a big splash! “I suggest everyone get their tickets as soon as possible as we know Grease will be very popular with our audiences,” said Dagenais. A very talented cast of local performers some of whom are making their LST debut, this is a cast you do not want to miss. Our production draws inspiration from the best of the 1971 original Broadway production, the classic 1978 film and the 2016 NBC production of Grease Live!  Set in 1959 at Rydell High School, audiences will be delighted by the classic songs including “Summer Nights,” “Greased Lightning,” Hopelessly Devoted to You,” “You’re the One that I Want,” and “We Go Together.”  Songs featured from the original Broadway production include “Freddy My Love,” “Those Magic Changes” and “Shakin’ at the High School Hop.”  “Grease is such an exciting to show to open our 2017 season! We have an extremely talented cast; they are such strong actors, singers and dancers and have been doing amazing work in rehearsal” said show director Dave Dagenais.

Our second show of the season brings Superior Arts Youth Theater to our stage with the sounds of Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr. cast one performs August 1-5, and cast two performs August 8-12! Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr. is a musical review featuring all your favorite numbers from the classic 1970s cartoon. The two casts are made up of a total of sixty local youth (ages 4-17) are busy in rehearsals learning songs about adjectives and the Constitution! “The SAYT kids have been picking everything up so quickly – some of them had the lyrics memorized by the second week of rehearsal!” said Director, Susan Candey.

Fan favorites like “Interplanet Janet” and “Conjunction Junction” are woven together with the story of a nervous, young teacher preparing for their first day in the classroom. To complement the nostalgic songs, our production will utilize popular dance moves from the ’50s and ’60s and the colorful, retro design elements of the original TV show.

Candey added, “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr. is my second production guest directing for Superior Arts Youth Theater and I am delighted to have another opportunity to work with the kids; it is exciting to see how the returners have grown and improved as performers and leaders since last summer’s production. Performing in shows with the youth theatre had a large influence on my own middle and high school years, so it’s gratifying to see the program continue to flourish and to have the opportunity to return as a director.”

Our third production of the season is Steel Magnolias, Directed by Denise Clark, with a cast of amazing women from our community! This production will run August 15-18 & 22-25 this is a touching play that unravels the layers of tangent relationships among a group of very different Southern women whose lives are presented through the prism of their one common social setting, Truvy Jones’ in-home beauty salon. It’s Spring of 1987 and in the northwestern Louisiana parish of Chinquapin there’s excitement and anticipation in the air, particularly at Truvy’s Beauty Spot where the ladies are prepping for Shelby’s wedding. The salon chat is quick, upbeat and funny, revealing diverse personalities and a colorful picture of the quirky locale. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, (“I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for forty years”); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy and the sudden realization of  mortality affects the women, but also draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

To close our season from August 29-September 1 we will bring you an evening of song and dance as Lake Superior Theatre presents our Magic to Do Cabaret! This will be an eclectic presentation of Broadway and Cabaret-style music accompanied by fan favorites and our own company selections. We have so much talent in our community and we are glad to put together a showcase of it for your enjoyment! The show will include solos, duets, small group numbers as well as several full cast numbers. Produced by Jeff Bruning who wowed us last year with night after night of sold out performances this show is sure to be a fun filled night for the whole family!

We hope you’ll make time during your busy summer to let us entertain, inspire, educate, and enlighten you. See you at the boathouse with the million dollar lobby view! All performances start at 7:30pm.
