NMU Seaborg Center Offers Isle Royale Summer Expedition

Marquette, MIApril 30, 2017 – Registration is open for a summer Family Camp Expedition on Isle Royale, Lake Superior’s largest island, presented by Northern Michigan University’s Seaborg Center. The program runs Sunday, June 25-Friday, June 30. Participants will camp at Fork Wilkins State Park before traveling to Isle Royale for hiking, kayaking and exploration. Evening programs will feature island history, ecology and creative activities.

The trip is open to children ages 10 and older. At least one parent, aunt, uncle, guardian or grandparent must accompany each child. Travelers will kayak to nearby small islands and watch for wildlife along the shore. They will also search for wildflowers and signs of the families who once lived there.

Karen Bacula, Marquette Area Public Schools teacher and Isle Royale camping veteran, will guide the expedition for the third time.

“This trip is unique because we will be spending four days at Malone Bay, which is one of the more difficult places to reach on Isle Royale,” said Bacula. “Our camping location will provide us with easy access to Lake Superior, Siskiwit Lake, the Siskiwit River and hiking opportunities on the Ishpeming trail.”

The cost is $400 for children ages 10-13 and $475 for 14 and older. Most camping equipment and all meals are provided. There is free time included each day. A pre-trip meeting will take place in early June on a date to be determined.

The Isle Royale Institute and the Ford Center are also sponsoring the expedition. Register by Monday, May 1, at www.regonline.com/isleroyale2017. For more details or questions, contact the Seaborg Center at 906-227-2002.
