MSHS Athletes of the Year

May 25, 2019

Marquette, MI – The Athlete of the Year breakfast banquet was held at Northern Michigan University by the Superiorland Kiwanis Club in Marquette.

Marquette Senior High School, along with Superiorland Kiwanis, are proud to announce the Athletes of the Month for May, the final monthly award for the 2018-19 academic year. May’s athletes are Rachael Hunt (girls track & field) and Julien Malherbe (boys track & field).

Rachael Hunt is a senior student at MSHS and is putting the finishing touches on another successful season on the Girls Track & Field Team. This season will mark the end of her highly accomplished athletics career at Marquette, where she also competed on the Girls Tennis and Girls Basketball teams.

Rachael is a member of a talented group of sprinters on this year’s track & field team. Much of the team’s success has stemmed from the top finishes of this group and Rachael has very much been a key component of that. Aside from her sprint events, Rachael is also the reigning U.P. Division 1 Champion in the long jump. At last week’s Regional Meet in Escanaba, Rachael garnered a 1st place finish in the 400 Meter Relay, 2nd place finish in the long jump and 4th place finish in the 200 Meter Dash. Her points earned in these events at the U.P. Track & Field Finals will be crucial to the team taking back their spot as Division 1 Champions.

Rachael’s career on the tennis court saw her previously win a U.P. Championship in doubles and named to the All-U.P. 1st Team. During the winter season, Rachael brought her athleticism to the Varsity Girls Basketball Team, where she contributed important minutes towards helping the team capture Great Northern Conference and District championships. Academically, she’s a member of the Honor Roll.

Outside of school, Rachael volunteers time in youth sports camps and at the Salvation Army’s Food Bank. In her leisure time, she enjoys spending time with her friends and family as well as being at camp. Her post-graduation plans are to attend Northern Michigan University to continue her education in the school’s nursing program.

Julien Malherbe is a senior three-sport student-athlete at MSHS and is finishing out his final spring season strong as a member of the Boys Track & Field Team. Aside from track & field, Julien’s additional sport participation comes within the Cross Country and Nordic Skiing programs.

On this year’s boys track & field team, Julien has provided a young team with the veteran leadership needed to help those students gain confidence as the season has progressed. With Julien and others leading the way, the team is positioned well to again have another strong finish at next weekend’s U.P. Track & Field Finals. At last Thursday’s Regional Meet in Escanaba, Julien qualified in three events with 1st place finishes on the 3200 Meter Relay and 1600 Meter Relay as well as a 2nd place finish in the 400 Meter Dash.

Overall, Julien is a three-time U.P. track champion and has garnered All-State accolades on six separate occasions. His leadership hasn’t been limited to the track as he also served as a team captain on this year’s Boys Nordic Ski Team and played an important role as the team captured 1st Place at the Michigan High School State Meet.

Julien’s academic performance is outstanding as well. His 4.33 GPA ranks him in the top-10 of his class and earned him one of the prestigious academic Kaufman Awards that were awarded yesterday evening (May 22). He is also a member of the National Honor Society.

Outside of school, Julien enjoys playing the drums, traveling and mountain biking. His post-graduation plans are to attend the University of Michigan next year, where he plans to pursue a degree in engineering.

KEYNOTE

The Keynote address for the year end banquet was given by NMU Hockey Head Coach Grant Potulny. In his speech, coach Potulny stressed the importance of building on your personal character, because when you leave the team, your jersey is given to the next person and all you have moving forward is your own brand that you have for the rest of your life. Be not just an athlete, but a good steward with our community.

ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

The event wrapped up with the introduction of all of the Athletes of the Month for the 2018-19 acedemic year with the overall awards for Female Athlete of the Year going to Avery Ledy and the Male Athlete of the Year going to Raffy Millado.

Avery Ledy is a senior student at MSHS and is in the midst of an outstanding season as a member of the Varsity Girls Basketball Team. She and the team currently own a 13-3 record and recently clinched another Great Northern Conference (GNC) championship.

As a junior, Avery was named as the GNC Defensive Player of the Year and to the All-GNC First Team. In addition, she also earned All-U.P. Class A-B-C honors. Having achieved this level of success last year, it’s no surprise that she is motivated to repeat and further her achievements, team and individual, this season. On the court, Avery is a consistent leader for the team and averages a double-double at 16.5 points and 11.4 rebounds per game. Efficiency is also a key aspect of Avery’s game as she shoots 49% from the floor, 45% from the three point line and 76% from the free throw stripe.

Avery also performs at a high level in the classroom, where she owns a 3.11 GPA. Her academic achievement has made her a member of the honor roll as well as a recipient of the Academic Achievement Award. In addition to participating as a member of the Girls Basketball program, she is also a member of the Redettes Varsity Volleyball Team. As a team captain this year, she helped lead the team to a GNC Championship as well as being named to the All-GNC Second Team.

Avery is still in the midst of the college recruitment process and, while being undecided on where she will attend and play basketball next year, is doing her due diligence in finding the best fit for her academically and athletically.

Raffy Millado is a senior student at MSHS and a successful three-sport student-athlete participating as a member of the Varsity Boys Soccer Team, Varsity Boys Basketball team and Varsity Boys Track & Field Team.

The 2018 soccer season marked the second consecutive season where Raffy helped the team capture the U.P. Championship. His senior leadership, experience and talent as a forward played a significant role in the team’s success this year. In addition to his achievements on the soccer field, Raffy has also garnered awards in his other sports at MSHS. After the 2017-18 boys basketball season, Raffy was named to the All-Great Northern Conference 2nd Team. On the track, he was the 2018 U.P. Division I Champion in both the High Jump and Long Jump.

Academically, Raffy currently ranks at the top of this year’s senior class with a 4.23 GPA and has earned Honor Roll status and the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award each semester. Outside of school and athletics, Raffy also serves as President of the National Honor Society, Vice President of the Interact Club, Secretary of the Key Club and is a three-year member of the Student Council. He also finds time to volunteer with alter service and community meal at his church as well as other service projects through his extracurricular activities.

For fun, Raffy enjoys traveling, playing video games and hanging out with friends/family. His post-high school plans are to go to college at either the University of Michigan or Notre Dame and major pursue a degree in a science related program.
