Marquette Regional History Center Offers Heritage Crafts Special Exhibit and Workshop Series

Marquette, MI – The Heritage Crafts Special Exhibit and Craft Workshop Series will showcase traditional Upper Peninsula crafts including hair art, Norwegian fiber arts, beading, miniatures, wood burning, bookbinding, paper cutting, Potawatomi carved wooden spoons, Finnish bird carving, Ojibway quill art, and seed saving. Learn more about the crafts of our immigrant and Native American ancestors. The special exhibit, on display April 29 to September 26, 2019, will include example craft items from the History Center’s permanent collection, the workshop instructors, and the community.

This Heritage Crafts exhibit and workshop series is made possible in part by a grant from the Michigan Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this project do not necessarily represent those of the NEH or the MHC.

We will be offering a series of craft workshops and special programming throughout the year.

*Norwegian Fiber Arts Workshop on March 16 & 23, 10-3 pm.

*Changing Hands: A Heritage Crafts Exhibit Opening Reception May 1, 5-7pm. Guest speaker Dan Truckey will speak about the connection between immigration to the U.P. and craft traditions.

*Carving a Wooden Spoon Workshop May 18, 11-1 pm.

*Beading in Circles Workshop June 3 & 10, 11-1 pm.

*The Art & Practice of Seed Saving Workshop June 19, 6-7:30 pm.

*Miniature Art Workshop June 22, 10-3 pm.

*Annual Cemetery Walking Tour June 25, 1-6 pm.

*Wiigwaas Workshop July 27, 10-2 pm.

*Hands On! Art & History Day Camp August 19-23, 10-12 pm.

*Pyrography: Woodburning Workshop September 14, 9:30-3 pm.

*Finnish Bird Carving Workshop September 28, 10:30-4 pm.

*Exposed-Stitch Bookbinding Workshop November 2, 10-2:30 pm.

*Scherenschnitte Workshop December 7, 11-2 pm.
